US Senate finance committee to vote on health care bill

Friday, October 9, 2009

US Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has said that the Senate Finance Committee will vote on a sweeping health care reform bill next Tuesday. US President Barack Obama has made clear that extending health insurance coverage to as many Americans as possible is his top domestic priority.

Republican lawmakers, however, are still overwhelmingly opposed to the bill, saying it is too expensive and would expand the role of government in people’s health care.

Obama and his fellow Democrats in the Senate received some good news late Wednesday from the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office, which put the total cost of the Senate Finance Committee’s health care bill at $829 billion over the next decade, below Obama’s stated goal of $900 billion. The budget watchdog organization also said the health care bill would help reduce the federal budget deficit over the next ten years.

Harry Reid said he believed health care reform was moving forward. “And so today we stand closer than ever to fulfilling that fundamental promise, one for which we have fought for more than 60 years,” he said.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, however said that the cost estimate was “irrelevant”, because the final bill that will actually emerge from both houses of Congress is likely to look very different and cost a lot more. “What matters is that the final bill will cost about a trillion dollars, vastly expand the role of government in people’s health care decisions, increase premiums and limit choice,” McConnell said.

McConnell said Republicans favor a step by step approach to health care reform, focusing on prevention and wellness programs and dealing with the high costs of malpractice insurance doctors have to pay due to fears of excessive lawsuits.

Under the Finance Committee’s bill, US residents would be required to get health insurance or face a penalty, and insurance companies would face tough new regulations. For example, insurance companies could no longer reject coverage for people due to pre-existing conditions.

The Senate Finance Committee is likely to pass the bill, which will then have to be merged with one passed by the Senate health committee before it goes to the full Senate floor for debate.

Doha round of trade talks suspended after negotiations fail

Tuesday, July 25, 2006

The director-general of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Pascal Lamy, suspended negotiations in the Doha round of trade talks on Monday, after a meeting of six “core” negotiators India, Brazil, the United States, European Union, Japan, and Australia in Geneva failed to make any headway in reconciling differences over agricultural trade liberalisation. The US wanted cuts in import tariffs for farm products, which were rejected by EU, Japan and India, who asked for cuts in agricultural subsidies.

Peter Mandelson, the EU trade commissioner, told the Financial Times: “If the US continues to demand dollar-for-dollar compensation in market access [cutting tariffs] for reducing domestic support, no one in the developing world will ever buy that and the EU will not either.” Brazil also identified the US stand on subsidies as the reason the talks failed.

Susan Schwab, the US trade representative, said that the other countries sought exemptions from tariff cuts for a wide range of goods and that such exemptions would defeat the object of the talks – to expand trade. “As we went through the layers of loopholes . . . we discovered that a couple of our trading partners were more interested in loopholes than market access,” she said.

The Indian Commerce and Industries Minister, Kamal Nath said that developing countries could not allow their subsistence farmers to lose their livelihood and food security to provide market access to agricultural products from developed countries.

Four Simple Secrets To Selling Large Amounts Of Cash Value Life Insurance!

By Lew Nason

Would you like to know how and why the best producers are able to sell large amounts of cash value life insurance? If you knew their secrets could you sell large amounts of cash value life insurance, just like they do? Were talking about you earning $500,000 or more in first year commissions each year!

Some of you may be thinking; Yah, that would be great! But, the reason those producers are able to sell so much life insurance, is they have the technical knowledge, for a very specialized life insurance niche market. They are working with 412i plans, Estate Conservation, Premium Financing, Charitable Giving or some other specialty market.

While its true that some of the best producers do have the technical knowledge, and work in one of these very specialized advanced markets, it isnt how and why they are able to sell large amounts of cash value life insurance.

It may surprise you to know that every one of these life insurance sales leaders has the same basic problems you do! In fact, in most cases, the people who work in those very specialized, advanced markets have much worse problems, because of the small size of their market, competition, bad publicity and the large amounts of money they work with. However, they are successful because they know four simple secrets that you dont!

The simple secrets these top-producers know that you dont are; No matter what market you work in, every one faces the same four basic challenges:

1. Finding a niche market you understand and have a passion for!

2. Identifying and attracting the right prospects for your market!

3. Helping your prospects to recognize they have a problem!

4. Getting prospects to take action on the solution you offer!

The reason most agents and advisors struggle selling life insurance is they dont feel good about what they are doing. They look at themselves as just a salesperson, instead of seeing themselves as helping people to solve their financial problems.

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TAjDPU_eVWw[/youtube]

Whether you want to join the ranks of the top-producers, or you just want to make your career a whole lot easier, more fun and much more rewarding, you must have a passion for what you do!

Finding a market you understand and have a passion for!

Enthusiasm sells! So, find something that turns you on. Your specialty doesnt have to be a technical, advanced niche market. The great thing is that you can turn almost anything into a specialty. You could specialize in working with one armed, golfers, with high blood pressure. Or, maybe you could specialize in working with people who hunt deer, drive a jeep, are married, live in a mobile home and have a child in college.

I know of a top-producing agent who works exclusively with young families who have a newborn baby. Another, who works with widowed, retired women of color! And, yet another agent who works exclusively with divorcees, with children! Each of these advisors became the specialist in that market, because they identified themselves with that market and they already knew something about that market. They invested their time to learn everything they could about the people in those markets and the problems they face. And then, they learned the best ways to use their products to help those people to solve their problems.

What do you have a passion for in your life? Has something happened in your life that has impacted, made a difference, or changed you? What problems have you, your family, parents, friends and relatives faced?

What group of people do you identify the most with, and feel good with? Do you hunt, play golf, play tennis, bowl etc.? What civic and religious groups do you belong to? What past jobs have you worked in? What did your parents do for a living?

Every top-producer (or successful business person) I know has a burning passion for what they do! For them, its NOT just about making a sale! Its about really helping people!

Identifying and attracting the right prospects for your market!

Once you have decided on your specialty, once you have found something you have a real passion for, then youll want to determine whats the most pressing problem your products and services can solve for these people.

If youre working with young families with newborns, maybe their most pressing concern is saving for college, or making sure the money is there for college, if something happens to one of the parents. With widowed, retired women of color, maybe the dominant concern is learning how to manage their money with safety and guarantees, and then making sure they pass all of their money onto their children. For divorcees with children, maybe its eliminating debt, making sure the child support doesnt stop at the death of their former spouse, or qualifying for college financial aid.

Now, youll want to determine who you have the best chance of selling within your specialty? Who is your ultimate, best prospect within that group? What are their ages, income, social status, education, occupation and marital status? Do they own a home? Do they have school age children?

Where do you find these people? Where do they live? What newspapers and section of the paper do these people read? What newsletters and magazines do these people get? What business do they use? What professionals do they use doctors, accountants, P&C agencies, attorneys, etc.

Finally, how do you attract these people to you? Whats the best way to attract the Right people to you? Do you send out sales letters to a targeted list? Offer free reports? Form a Joint Venture? Offer a dinner seminar or a free educational workshop? Send out newsletters? Run ads in the newspaper? Get articles published? Write a book? Or, how about working your existing book of business? Or, letting your family, friends, relatives and everyone know about your specialty?

What every top-producer will tell you is All of these marketing methods work once you have a specialty, you determine who your ideal prospects are, and you send a message to them that clearly states how they will benefit by meeting with you!

All the top-producers know exactly who their best prospects are, and how to attract them The Right Message, To The Right People, At The Right Time

Helping your prospects to recognize they have a problem!

We all have financial problems. It doesnt matter if you are rich or poor. The problems can be paying too much in income taxes, transferring wealth, losses in the stock market, saving for retirement, saving for college, a low income, too much debt, protecting the people they love, etc.! Unfortunately, most people do not want to think about money, let alone talk about their situation and admit they have a financial problem! In this fast paced society, most of us are so busy with our day-to-day activities and problems to worry about our money problems until the problems need immediate attention!

Consider, youve studied and developed your specialty. Youve attracted the right prospect to you. But, until your prospect recognizes, understands and makes solving their problem a priority, you have little chance of setting an appointment or making a sale!

Your job is to know the right questions to ask that will get your prospect to talk about what they really need and want. Youve got to get them thinking about how their problem is affecting their current situation? If they dont correct the problem right now, how will it affect their future and future of their family?

If you want to sell more and larger life insurance policies, you must help your prospects to recognize that they have a problem! And, more importantly you must ask the right questions to help them to make solving their problem a priority!

Getting prospects to take action on the solution you offer!

Youve found your specialty, something you have a passion for! Youre sending, The Right Message, to The Right People, at The Right Time! Youre asking the right questions! Your prospect recognizes they have a problem and they agree that solving their problem is a priority. Now, how do you get them to take action today on your offer?

If you want your prospects to take action today, then you must help them to see where they are today and where theyll be in the future with and without your solutions.

There is a cost to everything we do. Where will they find the money? What will your prospect have to sacrifice in order to implement your plan? Do the future benefits of your plan outweigh the cost of implementing the plan today? As the late, legendary Ben Feldman said, There is a cost of doing nothing and a cost of doing something. Generally, the cost of doing nothing is much more than the cost of doing something!

There you have it, Four Simple Secrets To Selling Large Amounts Of Cash Value Life Insurance! So, now what will you do from here? Is there one idea you got from this article that you can start using today? How about a second, or third idea?

If you do nothing else, find something you have a passion for! Life is too short to be struggling all of the time!

Whether you want to join the ranks of the top-producers, or you just want to make your career a whole lot easier, more fun and much more rewarding, it all starts with having a passion for what you do!

Google Taiwan: Building knowledge sharing center-stage with innovations

Tuesday, December 25, 2007

Last Tuesday in Taipei, Google Taiwan held an annual summary press conference named “Collective Intelligence & Innovation” (In Chinese: ?????????). With many products had already been presented to the public like wikis, blogs, and photo albums in the Web 2.0 era, Google served to provide lots of services like Google Apps, Google Maps and YouTube with suitable versions in Taiwan differing other countries this year.

Global Deputy Director of Google Kai-Fu Lee said: “The contents on the Internet were mostly limited with some copyright issue in the past, but after many products in the Web 2.0 era are presented, several contents are progressively released and opened to the public in the presence. As those factors, we [Google] hope developers in Taiwan can develop useful tools for local people to apply with people’s life.”

“In order to change minds in public, we [Google] conjoined some required elements into people’s life, and services on iGoogle in Taiwan are progressively more and newer because of the improvements of developers. We hoped a simple service can be multiplied with releases of useful and functional tools,” he also said.

Also in this conference, the Engineering Director of the Google Taiwan R&D Center Li-feng Chien also announced the achievements on the “Google Taipei Developers’ Day” and invited developers named Chi-pao Hu and Yi-ru Lin to share some actual applications on iGoogle.

Mia Farrow, Carole White testify in Charles Taylor’s war crimes trial

Wednesday, August 11, 2010

Actress Mia Farrow and Carole White have testified in former-Liberian president Charles Taylor’s war crimes trial at the Special Court for Sierra Leone in The Hague, The Netherlands.

Farrow and White’s testimonies contradict supermodel Naomi Campbell’s testimony from last week.

White said Campbell was “mildly flirtatious” with Taylor at a dinner in South Africa in 1997. Taylor, she alleged, told Campbell he would send her diamonds. White continued to say Campbell communicated with Taylor and awaited the diamond. Campbell was “very excited” about the diamonds according to White.

“[Taylor’s men] came in and they sat down in the lounge and we sat opposite them… they then took out a quite scruffy paper and they handed it to Miss Campbell and said ‘these are the diamonds.'”

Farrow claimed Campbell told her Taylor received diamonds in the middle of the night. She testified, “[Campbell] said that in the night she had been awakened, some men were knocking at the door, and they had been sent by Charles Taylor, and they had given her a huge diamond.”

Last week in Campbell’s testimony, she did not know who sent her diamonds, but testified her then-agent White told her who probably sent the diamonds. White and Farrow testified Campbell said the diamonds were from Taylor. She claims she gave the diamonds to Jeremy Ractliffe who gave them to police.

Police spokesperson Musa Zondi confirms Ractliffe had uncut diamonds. “Yes, they are real diamonds. We cannot tell whether they are ‘blood diamonds’ or not. That will be part of the investigation,” Zondi said.

Taylor faces eleven counts for violating international law including, murder, rape, sexual slavery, enlistment of children under the age of fifteen, pillaging, enslavement, and “outrages upon personal dignity.”

Taylor allegedly traded “blood diamonds” for weapons and supplying the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) of Sierra Leone with weapons during the civil war from 1991 to 2002. This war conscripted child soldiers, an international crime. The prosecutors for the Special Court say Taylor trained the rebels and had them rape, murder, mutilate, and decapitate the civilians of Sierra Leone. Over 100,000 people died in the Sierra Leonean civil war. Taylor plead not guilty to all charges.

Linking the blood diamonds, used to support the RUF, to Taylor is a high priority for the prosecution.

Find Emergency Plumbing Services That You Can Rely On

byAlma Abell

Taking care of a home’s plumbing is one of the most important things a homeowner can do to prolong its lifespan. Many plumbing issues arise from the misuse of toilets and drains to dispose of items they aren’t suited for disposing of. This can cause a lot of problems with a home’s sewer system, creating clogs and backing it up into your home’s sinks and toilets. This can lead to a lot of problems when it comes to water damage, plumbing damage, and can also be an embarrassing situation for you to deal with. It can also lead to the prevention of your family getting rid of their own waste products, as well as preventing them from bathing properly. Getting a situation like this taken care of as soon as possible with Emergency Plumbing Services is recommended, to restore your home’s sewer system back to normal.

Other emergency situations can result in problems in the home, such as a water main bursting or leaks in a home creating water damage and mold growth. When mold grows in a home due to standing water or water damage in the area, it can create a serious health risk to you and your family which can get worse over time. The longer it’s allowed to grow in your home, the sicker your family can potentially get. It’s best to have a professional plumber resolve the situation that first started the mold problem, and then help to remove the mold growth and prevent it from returning. Many plumbers consider mold an emergency situation which requires their assistance as soon as possible.

Plumbing issues can arise when you least expect them, and oftentimes a plumbing nightmare will occur when you’re out of the home which can cause even more damage to occur to areas of your home than you may realize. When dealing with a plumbing emergency that has occurred while gone, you should expect to see extensive water damage in the home to both the home itself and your belongings. Calling for Emergency Plumbing Services as soon as you realize there’s a problem will help prevent further damage, but only if you act quickly.

British Columbia teachers dropping the chalk and walking out

Friday, October 7, 2005

British Columbia teachers have voted 91% in favour of withdrawing services, beginning today (October 7). This is in response to Bill 12 which, if passed, imposes a contract with neither pay raises nor caps on class sizes. It has passed third reading today and is expected to receive royal assent later today. B.C. teachers have had four such imposed contracts since 1993, spanning two different provincial governments. The B.C. Legislature has been meeting around the clock to try and get the motion through.

This issue has been escalating for some time. Already, B.C. teachers are greatly underpaid (in terms of lifetime earnings), in comparison to those in other provinces, due to the B.C. government’s zero wage increase policy for all public sector employees. In addition, they feel learning conditions are sub-par, with many classes overcrowded, and insufficient resources to provide for special needs children.

Hugh Finlayson, CEO of the BC Public School Employers’ Association, representing the government, has asked the Labour Relations Board to halt the action. He has said that the walk out, which would affect 600,000 students, would break labour code, since education is, by B.C. law, an essential service.

The labour board ruled at 11:00 PM October 6, 2005 that the action is illegal. It has ordered teachers to return to normal duties and schedules. They have also been asked not to picket at or near schools. This has had no effect on the teacher’s planned action.

Being categorized as an essential service makes any striking action illegal, unless approved by the Labour Board. The intent of the teachers’ original job action was to seek this approval, but this was halted by the passing of Bill 12. The International Labour Organization, the United Nations agency involved in upholding labour standards worldwide, has even urged Gordon Campbell’s government to repeal the law making education an essential service.

The government has threatened legal action against the union, and possibly even jail for the union leader, but the teachers are arguing that this action is not a strike, merely political protest, and is therefore covered under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

The situation could escalate quickly such as what occurred in the HEU strike. A general strike is not out of the question. Many unions have noted that they would stand-behined the BCTF.

Intel acquires mobile Linux developer, OpenedHand

Tuesday, September 2, 2008

The United Kingdom-based mobile Linux developers OpenedHand have announced that they have been acquired by the Intel Corporation, merging the Linux company with the Intel Open Source Technology Center.

“We are pleased to announce that OpenedHand Ltd has been acquired by Intel Corporation,” said OpenedHand in a statement it released on the acquisition. “The OpenedHand team will join the Intel Open Source Technology Center and will focus on the development of the Moblin Software Platform, the optimized software stack for Intel Atom processors.”

The statement continued by stating that “Intel will continue supporting open source projects currently led by OpenedHand staff such as Clutter and Matchbox projects, and in most cases, will accelerate these projects as they become an integral part of Moblin.”

Rob Bamforth, an analyst for Quocirca, said that this move showed the importance of Linux on mobile devices. He said that “we saw it [large companies purchasing mobile Linux development companies] earlier this year with Nokia buying Trolltech, it’s a sign that the mobile space is not as clear cut as the something like the PC one.” He continued by stating that in the PC market “you have a market dominated by PCs with Macs for some specialist users, but mobiles are not like that – there’s a diverse range of products, and, if anything, it’s becoming more diverse.”

OpenedHand has previously sold its products to companies such as One Laptop Per Child, iRex, Openmoko, ST Microelectronics, Access Co., Vernier and Nokia.
