Van Halen singer impersonated in Canadian medical scare

Saturday, July 12, 2008

Canadian police officers who thought they were saving Van Halen singer David Lee Roth’s life in May have now learned that they were assisting an impostor.

On May 23, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers near Brantford, Ontario stopped a vehicle that was travelling abnormally. They discovered a driver who identified himself as “David Lee Roth” who was having medical trouble. The driver was taken to Brantford General Hospital for treatment of anaphylaxis, reportedly caused by a peanut allergy.

Following his treatment and release from hospital, the man accompanied two nurses to a local bar, Liquid Lounge, where he sung the Van Halen song “Ice Cream Man” with a local band.

But it was since determined that Roth was performing with Van Halen in New York City on the evening that the incident occurred. A statement was issued through Roth’s publicist denying that he was in Ontario and that the singer is not allergic to peanuts. The OPP officers at the time of the incident did not seek identification of the impostor due to concern over the man’s medical condition, but are now aware of his real identity.

What makes the Celebrity Bed sleep system different from other Temperpedic Beds is its cashmere-blend mattress cover and pillow-top sleeping surface. Meanwhile, the Grand Bed systems can cost as much as $6700. These are pretty high costs for average buyers who may simply want a fairly comfortable, basic mattress.

If prices are steep, you could weight the option of the company’s no interest financing plan for qualified consumers. Alternatively, Temperpedic sells accessories like mattress pads and pillows, making the TEMPUR experience accessible for all consumers.

NASA launches satellites to study northern lights

Saturday, February 17, 2007

A Delta II rocket blasted off from NASA’s Cape Canaveral launch pad today, carrying five satellites designed to investigate the northern lights and the electromagnetic storms that cause them. The launch had been twice delayed due to bad weather, but was eventually performed at 23:00 UTC.

NASA and the Canadian Space Agency have collectively invested $200 million in the mission, known as the THEMIS Project. Through this mission, they hope to develop better techniques to forecast electromagnetic storms, in order to protect communication satellites, power grids, and spacewalking astronauts. Scientists from the University of Alberta and the University of Calgary also helped with the project.

The Sun continuously sends a stream of charged particles, called the solar wind, at the Earth. We are generally protected from the solar wind by the Earth’s magnetosphere. During substorms, however, the magnetosphere gets overloaded by the solar wind and the magnetic field lines stretch until they eventually snap back, energizing and flinging electrically charged particles towards Earth.

Scientists want to find out what snaps in the overloaded magnetosphere to trigger a substorm.

Gps Tracking Devices Unmasked: A Gps Explained

GPS Tracking Devices Unmasked: A-GPS explained

by

Roseli

GPS tracking devices permit you to pin down an actual position on Earth as given by signals from a sequence of orbiting satellites. They receive the signals and then display coordinates for you to check on the computer.

GPS tracking devices are starting to get increasingly preferred as they can be used for plenty of different purposes that anybody would find useful in some way. Imagine having the ability to monitor your new car’s location or perhaps know where your teenagers really are when they are saying they’re going to a friend’s house to study. Now you can with GPS tracking devices. assisted GPS is a way in which a GPS system’s start-up time can be tremendously improved. If you have ever used a GPS device then you can know that when you turn them on it takes some time for them to ‘lock on’ to the satellite’s signal. Depending on where you are this may be very fast ( in an open area ) to rather slow ( in the middle of the town with many tall buildings or a forest ).

A-GPS uses the device’s mobile net connection to get further GPS info to ‘fill in the gaps’ while the device starts up and start using the satellites faster. It can do this in alternative ways. It can log on to a server which can have a better GPS signal which should then update the device in query or it can use the server to obtain a positional ‘lock on’ instantly, instead of waiting.

A-GPS would be good for a GPS tracking device which should be online and tracking its objective for as long a time as practicable. Groups who would receive advantages from this :

The emergency services They could use A-GPS built into phones to find callers who are in a low signal area, thus saving lives even in remote places.

Police or PI’s need to be able to monitor their GPS tracking devices at every point or they may be at risk of losing a suspect or missing some important info. people who live in urbanized areas will not have to stress about losing GPS signal in the middle of a trip due to interference due to tall buildings or bridges and tunnels.

Many GPS devices nowadays are provided with A-GPS, so if you are impacted by slow GPS performance then you should search for them and see how they can start helping you get superfast GPS all of the time!

Civilians testify to Halliburton fraud, coercion

June 28, 2005

The Democratic Party held a public committee, aired on C-SPAN 3, at which former civilian employees based in or administering operations in Iraq, testified to specific instances of waste, fraud, and other abuses and irregularities by Halliburton and its subsidiary Kellogg, Brown and Root (KBR).

Allegations of fraud by Halliburton, specifically with regard to its operations in Iraq, have persisted since before the Iraq War. The associations between U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney and Halliburton, have been the basis for repeated speculation over possible political improprieties and business profiteering from the war.

Among the senators and representatives present at the hearing were Byron Dorgan (presiding), Henry Waxman, Frank Lautenberg, and Mark Dayton.

Among those testifying were Bunny Greenhouse, former Chief Contracting Officer of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Rory Mayberry, former Food Program Manager for Halliburton subsidiary, and Allan Waller, of the Lloyd-Owen International security and operations firm.

Greenhouse, who provided the bulk of testimony, spoke for several minutes about her involvement in the evaluation and crafting of government Army contracts, and how explaining how superiors undermined and dismissed her concerns of illegal business practices. “Ultimately my main concern was the repeated insistence that the Rio contract be awarded to KBR without competitive bidding,” Greenhouse said. She testified to have been given misinformation in answer to her complaints, and being “overtly misled” by KBR managers.

Mayberry, still in Iraq, testified by video from questions prepared by the committee. He said that KBR routinely sold expired food rations to the Army. The interviewer asked, “Are you saying that Halliburton deliberately falsified the number of meals they prepared and then submitted false claims for reimbursement and that they did this to make up for past amounts auditors had disallowed?” Mayberry firmly answered “Yes.” He said that serving expired food ration was “an everyday occurrence, sometimes every meal.” He explained that Halliburton systematically overcharged for the number of meals as well, saying, “they were charging for 20,000 meals and they were only serving 10,000 meals.” Dorgan later commented, “obviously there’s no honor here, by a company that would serve outdated food to our troops in Iraq.”

Mayberry also claimed would-be whistleblowers were threatened “to be sent to Falluja” and other “places under fire” if they talked to media or governmental oversight officials. In 2003 and 2004, Falluja had been well known as dangerous for foreign troops and civilians. “I personally was sent to Falluja for three weeks. The manager told me that I was being sent away until the auditors were gone, because I had talked to the auditors,” Mayberry said.

“The threat of being sent to a camp under fire was their way of keeping us quiet. The employees who talked to auditors were sent to camps under more fire than other camps, and Anaconda.” This report led Dorgan and others to voice considerable outrage that U.S. citizens would be personally threatened with harm for talking to oversight officials or media.

Allan Waller testified to specific examples of how KBR officials had conspired in blocking Lloyd-Owen fuel transports, and using other coercive means against its competitor. The British Lloyd-Owen has a direct contract with the Iraq government to provide fuel to various parts of the country.

In his introductory remarks, Dorgan explained that Senate Republicans had blocked or ignored any requests by Democrats to have a formal bipartisan hearing, resulting in the need for an independent committee.

BDSM as business: An interview with the owners of a dungeon

Sunday, October 21, 2007

Torture proliferates American headlines today: whether its use is defensible in certain contexts and the morality of the practice. Wikinews reporter David Shankbone was curious about torture in American popular culture. This is the first of a two part series examining the BDSM business. This interview focuses on the owners of a dungeon, what they charge, what the clients are like and how they handle their needs.

When Shankbone rings the bell of “HC & Co.” he has no idea what to expect. A BDSM (Bondage Discipline Sadism Masochism) dungeon is a legal enterprise in New York City, and there are more than a few businesses that cater to a clientèle that wants an enema, a spanking, to be dressed like a baby or to wear women’s clothing. Shankbone went to find out what these businesses are like, who runs them, who works at them, and who frequents them. He spent three hours one night in what is considered one of the more upscale establishments in Manhattan, Rebecca’s Hidden Chamber, where according to The Village Voice, “you can take your girlfriend or wife, and have them treated with respect—unless they hope to be treated with something other than respect!”

When Shankbone arrived on the sixth floor of a midtown office building, the elevator opened up to a hallway where a smiling Rebecca greeted him. She is a beautiful forty-ish Long Island mother of three who is dressed in smart black pants and a black turtleneck that reaches up to her blond-streaked hair pulled back in a bushy ponytail. “Are you David Shankbone? We’re so excited to meet you!” she says, and leads him down the hall to a living room area with a sofa, a television playing an action-thriller, an open supply cabinet stocked with enema kits, and her husband Bill sitting at the computer trying to find where the re-release of Blade Runner is playing at the local theater. “I don’t like that movie,” says Rebecca.

Perhaps the most poignant moment came at the end of the night when Shankbone was waiting to be escorted out (to avoid running into a client). Rebecca came into the room and sat on the sofa. “You know, a lot of people out there would like to see me burn for what I do,” she says. Rebecca is a woman who has faced challenges in her life, and dealt with them the best she could given her circumstances. She sees herself as providing a service to people who have needs, no matter how debauched the outside world deems them. They sat talking mutual challenges they have faced and politics (she’s supporting Hillary); Rebecca reflected upon the irony that many of the people who supported the torture at Abu Ghraib would want her closed down. It was in this conversation that Shankbone saw that humanity can be found anywhere, including in places that appear on the surface to cater to the inhumanity some people in our society feel towards themselves, or others.

“The best way to describe it,” says Bill, “is if you had a kink, and you had a wife and you had two kids, and every time you had sex with your wife it just didn’t hit the nail on the head. What would you do about it? How would you handle it? You might go through life feeling unfulfilled. Or you might say, ‘No, my kink is I really need to dress in women’s clothing.’ We’re that outlet. We’re not the evil devil out here, plucking people off the street, keeping them chained up for days on end.”

Below is David Shankbone’s interview with Bill & Rebecca, owners of Rebecca’s Hidden Chamber, a BDSM dungeon.

A Range Of Storage Racks

A range of storage racks

by

Brooke Pens

When you are trying to make the most of the space that you have available you need to make sure that you have storage systems that can house as many items as possible.

There are so many different options when it comes to picking storage racks; they are manufactured in a range of materials and there are the options of having a temporary or permanent storage solution. You can also have a mobile storage rack if this is something you need, the unit has four castors on and two of which have brakes so that they can be locked on the brake to keep the unit still if needed.

With the storage racks the units are easy to assemble and are bolt free so they are assembled with an easy tap together system. The only tool that you need to put the storage racks together is a rubber mallet. All of the shelves that come with the storage racks can be adjusted to the heights that you require, which really depends on what you need to store.

There are also a wide range of accessories that are available so that you can add these to the storage racks and modify them to create a unit that will accommodate your every need. The accessories that we have are edges to add to each shelf, dividers so that the shelf can be divided into sections. There are also additional shelves that can be purchased, along with connectors so if you have a number of units they can be connected so that they create a larger and stronger unit.

Here at BiGDUG we have a wide range of storage racks that all come in a range of sizes so you can make sure that you have a unit that works well in the space you have.
