Kennedy assassin Sirhan Sirhan stabbed in California prison

Tuesday, September 3, 2019

It was reported on Saturday Sirhan Sirhan was stabbed in the neck while in prison. Sirhan, 75, is serving a life sentence for the 1968 assassination of United States senator and presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy.

Sirhan was serving his time at Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego County, California. He was reported to be in stable condition.

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) did not identify Sirhan as the victim. Rather, government sources confirmed his identity to various news outlets anonymously.

The Department issued a statement that an inmate had been stabbed: “There was an assault on an inmate on Friday, August 30 at Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility at 2:21 p.m. […] Officers responded quickly and found an inmate with stab wound injuries […] He was transported to an outside hospital for medical care, and is currently in stable condition.” They also said they believed they had identified the attacker, who was being held in isolation pending investigation.

Sirhan, an ethnic Palestinian from Jordan, opposed Senator Kennedy’s pro-Israel position. Sirhan later claimed to have no memory of the night Kennedy was shot or of his own confession to the crime. For many years, Sirhan was held protectively separate from most prisoners at Corcoran State Prison because of his fame. At his own request, Sirhan was eventually transferred to the general population at Donovan.

Robert F. Kennedy was the brother of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, who had himself been assassinated in 1963. Robert was killed in June 1968, while seeking the Democratic nomination for president. Sirhan shot him in the head just after midnight, while he was walking through a hotel kitchen. Sirhan’s initial death sentence was commuted to life in prison when, for a time, California outlawed the death penalty.

Former US Representative Dan Rostenkowski dies aged 82

Saturday, August 14, 2010

Former US Representative Dan Rostenkowski died of lung cancer Wednesday at his vacation home in Genoa City, Wisconsin. Rostenkowski, whose political career ended in the early 1990s after he was convicted on fraud charges, was 82.

Rostenkowski’s death was confirmed by his spokesperson, Jim Jaffe, who said that the former congressman had been receiving treatment for lung cancer for a while. Rostenkowski had previously been treated for prostate cancer in the 1990s.

Rostenkowski was born on January 2, 1928 in Chicago, Illinois. He was an athlete and declined an invitation to try out for the Philadelphia Athletics (now the Oakland Athletics) in order to pursue a career in politics. Rostenkowski attended St. John’s Northwestern Military Academy in Wisconsin, served with the US Army in Korea, and graduated from Loyola University in 1951.

Rostenkowski’s political career was supported by the Cook County political machine, and he became a member of the Illinois state legislature in 1952, one year after graduating from college. In 1958, when he was 30, Rostenkowski was elected to the US House of Representatives. In 1961, he began serving on the United States House Committee on Ways and Means, the chief committee of the House for writing taxes. From 1981–1994, he served as the committee’s chairman. Rostenkowski was involved in the creation of Medicare in 1966 and he helped make amendments to the Social Security system in 1983.

In 1992, a federal jury began an inquiry into the House post office, and Rostenkowski was accused of buying US$22,000 in stamps with government funds and then turning them into cash. The investigation, which lasted two years, led to Republican allegations of corruption within the Democratic party. In 1994, Rostenkowski was charged with 17 felony counts, including the use of federal money to purchase furniture, and obstruction of justice. In order to avoid a trial, Rostenkowski made a deal with prosecutors, pleading guilty to two counts of mail fraud in exchange for fifteen months in prison, two months in a halfway house, and a US$100,000 fine.

Rostenkowski, who was not reelected for a nineteenth term in Congress in 1994, continued to maintain his innocence, and was pardoned by US President Bill Clinton in 2000.

Tornado kills 19 in Florida

Saturday, February 3, 2007

At least 19 people have been killed in central Florida in the city of Lady Lake and Paisley after severe storms and a tornado ripped through the cities in the middle of the night. Eleven of those killed were in Paisley and three were in Lady Lake.

The death toll is expected to rise as rescue crews resume tomorrow morning.

Volusia, Sumter, Lake and Seminole counties have all been declared a state of an emergency as dozens of houses, mobile homes and a church were destroyed. Clothes and furniture are scattered around the wrecked houses and pieces of trees are scattered about. Cars are reported to have been turned over or thrown around in the air.

“Our priority today is search and rescue,” said Gov. of Florida, Charlie Crist. Rescuers are still looking through the wreckage to find survivors of those who might have been killed.

A spokeman for the emergency response team of Lake county, Chris Patton calls the damage “devastating” and worse than “hurricanes in 2004.”

“We have complete devastation of homes, of businesses, religious institutions. It was unlike even perhaps the hurricanes of 2004 when we had minor roof damage, screen damage, pool damage. This is way far more devastating,” said Patton.

The storms hit at about 3:15 [EST] a.m. on Friday morning. At least 20,000-30,000 people are without power.

American pitchman Billy Mays dies at age 50

Sunday, June 28, 2009

American pitchman and advertiser Billy Mays has died at the age of 50. Mays was probably most known for his pitching of the multipurpose cleaning product OxiClean.

According to reports, Mays’ wife, Deborah, found him unresponsive Sunday morning in their home located in Tampa, Florida. Fire-rescue crews pronounced him dead at 7:45am EDT. The cause of death was heart disease.

According to reports, he was a passenger on U.S. Airways Flight 1241, a flight to Tampa from Philadelphia, that suffered a tire blowout upon landing on Saturday night. He was quoted as saying objects from the overhead compartments hit him in the head, but he did not seek medical treatment. Nobody was reported injured in the incident. Deborah said he did not feel well when he went to bed at around 10:00pm EDT the previous night.

An autopsy is expected to be completed by Monday afternoon.

“Although Billy lived a public life, we don’t anticipate making any public statements over the next couple of days. Our family asks that you respect our privacy during these difficult times,” said Deborah Mays in a statement to the press.

Mays recently began co-starring in a television show on the Discovery Channel called Pitchmen. Mays, along with English advertiser Anthony Sullivan starred in the show where they would ‘pitch’ several products. By the end of the show, two inventors would be selected and be given a chance at selling their product “en masse”.

Mays also pitched sales for several other products including furniture polish Orange Glo, Mighty Putty, the Gopher, Zorbeez, and the cleaning product Kaboom!.

The Government Battle Against Cell Phone Use While Driving

Click Here For More Specific Information On:

By Al Wannestadt

Legislature to combat using a cell phone while driving is a daily battle for local, state, and federal governments. Numerous studies and heart wrenching stories on loss of life due to distracted drivers have propelled government officials to take action on limiting cell phone use while driving. First, there was legislature put in place in certain cities & states that forced hands-free use of a cell phone only. Other steps of limiting cell phone use for public transportation workers, younger-aged drivers, and drivers in construction and school zones have been taken. As texting has became so popular, fighting texting while driving has became the latest battle. Legislature is changing weekly, if not daily as bills are continually submitted by local, state, and federal representatives.

Distracted driving is a constant problem on roads today throughout the nation. The term distracted driving encompasses more than just cell phone use, it involves eating/drinking, talking to passengers, looking at maps, playing with the radio etc. Distracted driving is anything that takes hands off the wheel, eyes off the road, or the mind from thinking of what drivers are doing while driving.

According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Association, in 2009, close to 5,550 people were killed in distracted driver accidents and half a million people were injured in accidents due to a distracted driver. Furthermore, 18% of all fatal car accidents were the result of a distracted driver.

Cell phone use is a major component of distracted driving. Cell phones distracting drivers has become such a problem that nine states and the District of Columbia to date, have taken the ultimate step to completely outlaw any use of cell phones while driving. Not even hands-free talking devices can be used in these areas.

Experts and studies on both sides differ as to whether hands-free devices are the true solution to keep drivers concentrated while talking on cell phones. The hands-free debate is why more states haven’t banned hand-held cell phone use or total use of cell phones while driving because of the inconclusive results. However, states will be weighing passing laws on the use of hand-held devices while driving more now since the federal safety funding is being cut to states that do not have at least bans on hand-held devices. New Orleans Representative Austin Badon has filed a bill this week to outlaw hand-held devices while driving in Louisiana. Badon explained that millions of dollars have been lost to Louisiana because of the lack of legislation and is why they are diligently working to pass a bill.

Texting, checking email and/or surfing the web is an area that most have come to an agreement on in the past couple years as being a very serious distraction for drivers. The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety found that drivers who use handheld devices are four times as likely to get into crashes serious enough to injure themselves. Another study found that when drivers text, they are impaired at the same level as if they had twice the legal limit of alcohol inside of them. These statistics and many more have pushed 30 states and the District of Columbia to step up to the plate on the texting issue by passing legislation and outlawing texting while driving for all drivers. Other states such as Arizona and Nevada have passed preliminary bills this month to be added to that list to outlaw texting while driving.

Still, the enforcement of these laws has been tough for officials and drivers continue to break these laws and ignore the dangers. States have begun setting up texting sting operations all across the state and have begun raising fines for offenders to get driver’s attention. Connecticut, who passed a texting while driving ban in 2005, still struggle with drivers texting that they have passed a significant raise in fines on offenders. Originally, first time offenders were fined $100, $150 for the second time and $200 for the third and subsequent offenses. The new law makes first time violation fines still $100 but all second and subsequent offenses will be $500 fines. A major fine that Connecticut officials expect to get the attention the law deserves and make drivers follow the law and drive safer.

Legislation limiting the use of cell phones will be a continuous fight that legislators on all levels of government will constantly be working on for years to come. Even with legislation passed, the governments still struggle to close loopholes on current laws and find ways to enforce the rules efficiently. Most importantly, regardless of what laws are in place, the ultimate goal is to have drivers put their cell phones away and concentrate on driving.

Assuring Your Life Forever

Insurance is a signed contract called policy. The party who buys the policy is called the Policyholder and the party that sells it is called the Insurer. It is taken to safeguard oneself from any financial loss occurring due to any event like death, accidents, damage to property or business, through acts of nature or caused by humans. It gives you peace of mind because you know you’ve prepared yourself for the worst.

The policy is always taken for a fixed period on which a pre-determined amount is paid at regular intervals to the insurer. This amount is called the Premium. Premiums are either paid as lump sums for a year or in installments.

Well, there are two types of insurance coverage: Life and General or Non Life Insurance. Life coverage is taken to support one’s family in the unfortunate event of death or permanent disability or a life-threatening disease. If you have loved ones who are financially dependent on you, then seriously opt for this cover. General coverage on the other hand covers all non-life losses. These can include health issues, damage to property or business, etc.

Lets discuss health, accident and vision insurance, in the sense, what are they and how they are different from each other. Think for a moment and you’ll realize how time has passed by. Basic necessities like food, education, etc are not available at the same price today, which were few years back. In short, our cost of living has increased which means with the rise in the cost, health care has also become expensive now-a-days.

Healthcare expense would include medical bill, operation charges, medicines, hospital stay etc. If one day when you fall seriously ill and need to be hospitalized then this policy will help cover the medical expense. This way you are saving yourself and your family from financial difficulty.

You’ve been a very good driver all these years with a clear record. You follow rules and safety precautions, but not everybody does as you do, although they are expected to do it. Don’t fool yourself into believing that nothing will happen to you. What if one day you get hit by a fast moving vehicle coming your way. You can be badly injured and it might even lead to death.

In such situations an accident policy will take care of you and your family. It will cover tall the expensive medical treatments, physical therapy, crutches, wheelchairs etc.

Vision insurance is different from health insurance but is also a part of it, in the sense that it focuses on a certain part of your body i.e., your eye. It pays for eye examination, eyewear and other vision services. Some of the benefits you can get when you take this policy are: routine eye check at reduced rates, access to ophthalmologists, laboratories, surgeons etc.

What I strongly recommend is, before taking an insurance cover make sure to check the history of the company and its reputation. Evaluate policies with the insurer for changes or alterations in premium rates.

Scenario for impeachment of Lula raised in Brazil

Tuesday, June 28, 2005

São Paulo, Brazil — The government of the Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and his party, the Workers’ Party are the target of several serious accusations of corruption.

This is the most severe political crisis since Brazilians first attained their right to vote for a President in 1989, the former President Fernando Collor de Mello was elected.

The ruling Workers’ Party has not succeeded in its defense against the accusations. The Brazilian deputy Roberto Jefferson said that the ruling party bought the support of some Brazilian deputies, paying 30 thousand Brazilian Reals (US$ 12 thousand) each, every month. Although Jefferson said that he had no proof of this, he gave a very detailed description of the alleged corruption scheme.

The testimonies of other witnesses and the investigation that is being made by police gave support for some of the Jefferson’s claims. Independent investigation being made by newspapers and magazines, and the publication of documents and other evidences, expose the government and Workers’ Party more and more.

Popular support for the President is deteriorating. Except for the Workers’ Party and the Communist Party of Brazil (PCdoB) which are part of the government, there is not another political party in Brazil denying the accusations. All newspapers and magazines publish stories every day related to the scandal. The Workers’ Party itself is divided: some members believe that the accusations are true and that something went wrong, others prefer to deny the evidences and they argue that the party is innocent.

A great part of the work of the Brazilian parliamentarians is related to the investigation of the scandals. Besides the Votes-for-cash scandal dennounced by Jefferson, there are the Bingo’s scandal, the Post Office scandal and the Brazilian Reinsurance Institute (IRB) scandal. All of these scandals are being submited to investigation by Brazilian parliamentarians.

One important question is whether President Lula knew about the alleged scandals in his government or not. If he knew and he did nothing he was conniving or he participated, it is the worst. If he didn’t know, someone can say that he was very incompetent because he didn’t see something so big under his nose.

Today, the authority and the efficiency of the President is being questioned. Some people say that it was the former Minister José Dirceu who actually took great part of the decisions in Lula’s government. The politicians say that President Lula must take control of his government, that he should do a major reform of his government and that he should get away from the people who are involved in the scandals.

Besides the corruption dennounciations, the government of President Lula is being criticized by his weak social agenda. The programme called “Zero Hunger” has showed little results and many people accuse it of being just a marketing strategy.

The management of the economy has being praised by some analysts. However, critics, even inside the government like the Vice-President José Alencar have already criticized it, because of the high interest rates. There is not severe inflation, but unemployment is high, and salaries are low.

The next days or the next month may be decisive to the future of Lula. He must show that he is not involved in the corruption scandals, he must reform the government and he must prove that he is competent. The positive factor are that the Brazilian economy is not seriously contaminated by the political crisis until now, the population is perplexed but calm and the politicians are not envolving the President in the denunciations, although they demand the investigation of all corruption allegations. However, nobody knows how much this situation will remain or if it will remain until the end of the government of President Lula in 2006.

Record amount of fires during New Zealand Guy Fawkes

Monday, November 6, 2006

There were a record amount of fire calls during Guy Fawkes night, the festivities had emergency services stretched to the limit, a spokesman for the NZ Fire service said that it was “like driving through a war zone.” Despite this, no major structure fires were reported.

Preliminary numbers show that the amount of minor fires reported amounted to 1,729 between the period of October 27 and November 5. For the same period last year, 2005, there were only 1,632. Last year’s numbers were also record setting at the time. Over the Guy Fawkes weekend, November 4 – November 5, there were 784 reports of fires. The actual numbers will be released soon, as the false alarms and multiple reports are separated out. A safety campaign by the NZ Fire brigade advising the public to call 111 on the suspicion of any fire is expected to have increased the number of calls per incident. Discussions on the NZ volunteer firefighter’s mailing list suggest that the majority of bad behaviour occurred in urban areas.

The New Zealand police had to report to 423 reports of disorder in the top half on the North Island alone and in just seven hours. There was a fight which involved 40 people, in Whitianga; police were called to break up that fight and were also called to stop youths from getting fireworks from a shop. Also, in Tauranga, police were called to a fight party of 200 youths at 1.00 a.m. In Mount Albert, Auckland, police were forced to retreat and wait for reinforcements during an incident.

In Wellington, New Zealand, the police had to make 39 arrests, including assaults, disorderly behaviors and liquor ban breaches. The police said it was as bad as New Year’s Eve. “It was as busy as New Year’s Eve. It was one of the busiest nights we have had this year,” Sergeant Maggie Windle said, “Alcohol was a big factor in a lot of the arrests and a lot of the offending. We were dealing with the bulk of this mass disorder.”

Remarkably, the St John’s Ambulance Service reported only one serious firework related injury; a stabbing following an incident involving fireworks.

Mike Hall, chief executive/national commander of the New Zealand Fire Service, said: “The unfortunate result vindicates his call for a retail ban on fireworks, made last month. Despite warnings and a safety campaign, and even with parts of the country being much wetter than they were last year, firefighters were still called out more times than ever. That means that firefighters cannot respond as quickly as they would like to genuine emergencies, and thousands of volunteers across the country are needlessly called away from work and family commitments.”

The Government had previously warned the public that a ban on the public sale of fireworks would be enacted if behaviour was deemed unacceptable over the Guy Fawkes season.

Opinon polls indicate that the public is divided 50:50 over permitting the sale of fireworks, or wanting to see fireworks restricted to public displays or licensed operators. Mr. Hall said “the public are also sick of the danger to themselves, property and pets posed by misuse of fireworks, not to mention the late-night noise and mess associated with people letting off fireworks indiscriminately. The lack of a major fireworks-related fire or fatality at the weekend was pure luck.”

Allegedly Dunedin students were burning furniture in the streets.

Marian Hobbs, Member of Parliament, said that she has put in a bill to stop fireworks to be used by the public: “I’m not saying ban fireworks. I’m not a killjoy. But it does give us powers to stop what is dangerous, time-consuming and expensive. We have to make a start and put our foot down on this.”
