Polish peace activist imprisoned

Sunday, August 20, 2006

On August 9 in the Polish city of Pozna?, Krysztof Wantoch-Rekowski, an anti-hunger, anti-war campaigner from the international Food Not Bombs network was detained by police.

He was sentenced to six weeks imprisonment on the charge of “destroying” his identity card, which is a criminally punishable action under Article 276 of the Polish Criminal Code.

In a press statement made on August 15, supporters said that Wantoch-Rekowski did not destroy his card, he only stuck a “paper illustration” on it to prevent it from falling apart (“podklei? ‘papierow? ilustracj?’ swój rozpadaj?cy si? ze staro?ci dowód”). Typical (old-style) Polish identity papers are made of paper and soft carton and must be carried at all times.

Wantoch-Rekowski’s supporters claim that his detention is an example of the “absurdity” of an increase in imprisonment rates against “the homeless, the unemployed and those living on the margins of society” which has taken place, according to them, since the parliamentary and presidential elections in late 2005 were won by the right-wing Prawo i Sprawiedliwo?? (PiS) party and one of its leaders, Lech Kaczy?ski.

The number held in prison in Poland increased by 5% from about 83,000 to about 87,000 in the first six months of 2006, making it one of the highest imprisonment rates in the European Union. The imprisonment level in Poland increased 100% since the post-communist epoch, beginning in 1989.

When animals become injured or ill, it’s important to get veterinary treatment as soon as possible. Waiting will cause these conditions to get worse, and this can have a negative impact on the health of the animal. Read the information below to learn about common health issues that require immediate animal treatment in Alexandria VA.

Breathing Difficulties

Animals can have breathing difficulties due to various health issues including lung problems, heart failure, asthma, and viral infections. Symptoms of breathing problems include flared nostrils, breathing through an open mouth, and a faster breathing rate. Breathing problems can be fatal for animals if they don’t get veterinary care as soon as possible. A veterinarian will perform various tests to determine the cause of the breathing issues. These tests often include blood tests, x-rays, or an ultrasound of the chest cavity. If necessary, the veterinarian will place an oxygen mask on the animal while performing the various tests.

Bleeding Injuries

When an animal has an injury that causes blood loss, pet owners will need to get the animal to a veterinarian immediately to control the bleeding. Serious bleeding emergencies include wounds to the chest, abdomen, or head. If the bleeding doesn’t cease after applying pressure to the wound, or if the animal is bleeding profusely from any area of the body, a veterinarian will need to examine the animal.

Epileptic Seizures

Animals have seizures due to an abnormal reaction in the brain that can be caused by issues within the brain or from certain diseases. Common health issues that can cause seizures include low blood sugar, liver disease, and heat exhaustion. Consuming a poisonous substance can also cause animals to have seizures. Issues with the brain that can cause a seizure include tumors in the brain, infectious diseases, and head trauma. After the animal recovers from a seizure, pet owners should take the animal to a veterinarian for animal treatment in Alexandria VA as soon as possible.

Hayfield Animal Hospital provides various types of medical treatment for animals when they experience breathing difficulties, bleeding, seizures, and other emergency health issues. Contact us for more information about pet emergencies and treatment options.

New Jersey files lawsuit against federal sports betting ban

Wednesday, March 25, 2009

A New Jersey state senator has filed a lawsuit seeking to overturn a federal law banning sports betting in 46 states.

State Sen. Raymond Lesniak, a Democrat representing portions of Union County, filed the suit Monday, arguing the 17-year-old law is unconstitutional because it treats four states differently than the other states.

Under the law, sports betting is prohibited in all states except Delaware, Oregon, Montana and Nevada, although only the latter two currently allow wagering.

“This federal law deprives the State of New Jersey of over $100 million of yearly revenues, as well as depriving our casinos, racetracks and Internet operators of over $500 million in gross income,” Lesniak said in a statement to the press.

The 39-page lawsuit is believed to be the first challenge to the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992. New Jersey missed a 1994 deadline that would have allowed it to join the other states when the law was implemented.

Atlantic City officials and their political allies have argued allowing sports betting would give all the states a new source of revenue needed in the face of a staggering recession.

New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine was not involved with the lawsuit, but he said legalizing sports betting would help Atlantic City and said it was “worth pursuing”.

Legalizing sports betting in New Jersey could bring the state more than $50 million in annual tax revenue, according to officials from the Interactive Media Entertainment & Gaming Inc., a Washington, D.C.-based consultant for the electronic gaming industry, which joined Lesniak as a plaintiff in the lawsuit.

“This is about more than revenue,” said Joe Brennan Jr., chairman of Interactive Media Entertainment. “It’s about jobs and economic activity.”According to 1999 study, $380 billion in illegal sports betting occurs in the state each year.

New Jersey, in particular, is facing a difficult budget season, and the Atlantic City casinos are in what the Associated Press called a “financial meltdown”. Eleven of the city’s casinos suffered their biggest revenue decline in 30 years last month.

Delaware is reported to be considering regulating sports betting, which New Jersey backers of the lawsuit said adds a sense of urgency to the issue.

“We cannot afford to be naive about illegal sports betting,” New Jersey State Sen. Jeff Van Drew said in a statement to the press. “It’s happening right now, and is funding other criminal enterprises which are far more dangerous.”

The New Jersey Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association, the Thoroughbred Breeders Association of New Jersey and the Standardbred Breeders & Owners Association of New Jersey were also listed as plaintiffs in the lawsuit.

Cars big winner as 34th Annual Annie Awards handed out

Monday, February 12, 2007

Cars drove home the big prize last night, from the 34th Annual Annie Awards. The animation industry’s highest honor, ASIFA-Hollywood’s Annies recognise contributions to animation, writing, directing, storyboarding, voice acting, composing, and much more.

As mentioned, Pixar took home the big prize last night, after facing stiff competition from four other Happy Feet, Monster House, Open Season, and Over the Hedge.

But the biggest winner of the night didn’t get a “Best Animated Feature” nod at all. Flushed Away won five feature animation categories including Animated Effects (Scott Cegielski), Character Animation (Gabe Hordos), Production Design (Pierre-Olivier Vincent), Voice Acting (Sir Ian McKellan as Toad), Writing (Dick Clement, Ian La Frenais, Chris Lloyd, Joe Keenan, and Will Davies).

Over The Hedge won awards for Directing (Tim Johnson and Karey Kirkpatrick), Storyboarding (Gary Graham), and Character Design (Nicolas Marlet).

Of little surprise, Randy Newman won an Annie for Cars in the “Music in an Animated Feature Production” category. Newman has won many Oscars for his movie music, and has a nomination this year for the song “Our Town”. Newman didn’t attend the Annies, instead picking up a Grammy for “Best Song Written For Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media”.

DisneyToon Studios’ Bambi II won “Best Home Entertainment Production”, while “Best Animated Short Subject” went to Blue Sky Studios’ No Time For Nuts, which is based on Ice Age.

“Best Animated Video Game” went to Flushed Away The Game, while a United Airlines ad named “Dragon” won a “Best Animated Television Commercial” Annie for DUCK Studios.

Bomb attack in Londonderry, Northern Ireland injures two police officers

Friday, October 8, 2010

A bomb exploded early on Tuesday morning in Londonderry, Northern Ireland, injuring two police officers. Investigations into the identity of the bombers and their motive are continuing. The Real Irish Republican Army a paramilitary group that aims to bring about a united Ireland, has claimed responsibility.

The explosion on Culmore Road caused serious damage to nearby buildings, including Da Vinci’s hotel and a branch of the Ulster Bank. A telephone warning was given an hour beforehand and the area, including the hotel, was cleared. The officers, standing near the edge of the exclusion zone, suffered injuries to their necks and ears when they were blown over by the blast.

Chief Superintendent Stephen Martin from the Police Service of Northern Ireland asked for anyone who had seen the Vauxhall Corsa car in which the bomb was hidden before the explosion to come forward. Although the bomb, thought to be over 200lb, was left near the bank, Mr Martin did not think it was the intended target and said that the bomb may have been left because of the presence of police in the area.

The Deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland, Martin McGuinness, called the bombers “Neanderthals” and “conflict junkies”, and added that they were “failing miserably” to destroy the peace process in Northern Ireland. He is attending the Conservative Party conference in Birmingham; the Daily Mail reports he refused to comment on if the attack was to coincide with his absence. The city’s mayor, Colm Eastwood, who was at the scene, said he was “disgusted”, adding “I do not know what these people are hoping to achieve. They say they love their country but they spend time trying to destroy it.”

Arson charge for man who cleaned home with gasoline

Wednesday, April 8, 2009

Ernest Krajniak from Chilton, Wisconsin in the United States has been charged with arson after a lit cigarette ignited gasoline soaked clothes, setting his apartment ablaze.

On Friday April 3, Krajniak, 47, cleaned his entire apartment with about five gallons of gasoline, wiping everything down with the soaked clothes. After he was finished, he piled the soaked clothes in the center of his bedroom, lit a cigarette and then threw what was left of the still lit cigarette, into the pile.

Krajniak never called the fire department and never pulled the alarm. Instead he yelled ‘fire’ a few times then walked to the police station where an ambulance took him to a local hospital for the treatment of minor burns. The fire department later arrived to put out the blaze and his apartment was extensively smoke damaged. 11 other apartments were also damaged, leaving the occupants without a place to stay for at least a week.

“I should have never used that,” said Krajniak during a court appearance on Monday. He admitted to knowing that gasoline was highly flammable. He was arrested and his bond has been set a US$2,500. Krajniak’s next court appearance is scheduled for Monday, April 13. According to WISinfo.com, Krajniak has no prior criminal record.

The careless smoking of cigarettes has been blamed for thousands of fires across the U.S. In January 2008, an unnamed elderly woman in Buffalo, New York was receiving oxygen for medical problems in her home and lit a cigarette and began to smoke it. The oxygen coming from her mask then facilitated the ignition of her clothing, setting her on fire.

In the U.S. in 2002, only 4% of all residential fires were reportedly caused by smoking materials. These fires, however, were responsible for 19% of residential fire fatalities and 9% of injuries. The fatality rate due to smoking is nearly four times higher than the overall residential fire rate; injuries are more than twice as likely. Forty percent of all smoking fires start in the bedroom or living room/family room; in 35% of these fires, bedding or upholstered furniture are the items first ignited.

Colleges offering admission to displaced New Orleans students/OH-WY

See the discussion page for instructions on adding schools to this list and for an alphabetically arranged listing of schools.

Due to the damage by Hurricane Katrina and subsequent flooding, a number of colleges and universities in the New Orleans metropolitan area will not be able to hold classes for the fall 2005 semester. It is estimated that 75,000 to 100,000 students have been displaced. [1]. In response, institutions across the United States and Canada are offering late registration for displaced students so that their academic progress is not unduly delayed. Some are offering free or reduced admission to displaced students. At some universities, especially state universities, this offer is limited to residents of the area.

Behind The Mynd Selfish Versus. Self Centered}

Click Here For More Specific Information On:

Submitted by: Michael Bloxton

I have seen all types and styles of sales training and techniques. But, the truth is, there are only two types of trainings that can ever be given to a sales team to improve closing ratios (the number of presentations made vs. the number of sales made). The first is product (or service) training and the second is personal development training.

The first type of training is relatively straight forward and easy to implement. You can have an intricate product that has thousands of moving parts or you could provide a complex service involving finance, real estate, taxation, or legal matters but no matter the product or service, it is simple to mold a training program.

To do this, you simply need to understand what the product or service is, what is important to the customer when making their decisions, and what information the sales person will want to have in order to fulfill the customers needs. This is very clear in terms of need to know information. You can create a book, manual, or straight forward training system to get all parties up to speed in short order.

Now we move on to the personal development training of a sales force which is the most overlooked, under-utilized, and most valuable training of all. There are sales-specific subjects in this category such as how to sell, how to get prospects to buy from you, how to get customers to like you, how to increase your sales, how to attract your customer, how to move prospects to action basically, how to do EVERYTHING having to do with sales. There are also non-sales-specific subjects in this category like building rapport, communicating effectively, being a good listener, and how to ask action-empowering questions.

It is in this category that many companies training starts to fail. Even if a company provides good training in sales-specific subjects, rarely do they offer non-sales-specific training. The top sales people in most companies, recognize this, and on their own, have sought out this type of training. They took initiative, knew what it would take, and went after it. However, if you own a company, youd be a leader if you included this type of training for your own sales teams. However, this article is directed to the individual sales person.

If you are a sales person, you may recognize the need for additional training. If not, ask yourself, Am I an expert in all of the topics mentioned above? If you arent, then take advantage of additional training. If you already recognize why its beneficial then the next question is, Where do I start?

There are countless sales training systems and sales techniques out there. Most are useful and informative to some degree. With some research, you can identify the good programs. There is one concept in particular though, that we have found to be invaluable in our careers.

Early in our careers, we were taught that there was a difference between being a powerful sales person and one that relies on a forceful approach to make his/her sales. Power vs. Force. At first glance it may seem as though they are the same, but in reality, they arent. They are very different. Mastering the difference, will jumpstart your sales career in a HUGE way.

If a sales person were to use the same pitch on every customer, how effective might that technique be? Everyone is different, their motivation for buying, their personalities, their priorities. And yet, this sales person says the exact same thing to everyone they meet. Typically, the presentation was designed to attract people like the sales person themselves. This is a perfect example of Force in action. The goal is to make the sale. Its like forcing the presentation on the prospects. Have you felt that? Have you wondered if the sales person you were talking to was even listening? Did you buy from that person? This sales person is inward focused. Its all about him/her.

The other approach is the utilization of power. By choosing this technique, the salesperson listens, asks clarifying questions, and fulfills the needs of the customer, not themselves. The powerful salesperson is more inclined to pay attention to what the customer wants, and the goal is to focus on the customer. Insure that they are satisfied, that your product is well-suited to them, and to satisfy their requirements. This sales person can identify the personality type of the customer, and adjust their approach to suit the person in front of them. They are outward focused.

There is no way for us to cover all of the details on how you do this here in one article. Instead, our goal in this post is to make you aware of the difference between using POWER in your sales approach rather than FORCE. It is crucial to your success.
