Actress Mia Farrow and Carole White have testified in former-Liberian president Charles Taylor’s war crimes trial at the Special Court for Sierra Leone in The Hague, The Netherlands.
Farrow and White’s testimonies contradict supermodel Naomi Campbell’s testimony from last week.
White said Campbell was “mildly flirtatious” with Taylor at a dinner in South Africa in 1997. Taylor, she alleged, told Campbell he would send her diamonds. White continued to say Campbell communicated with Taylor and awaited the diamond. Campbell was “very excited” about the diamonds according to White.
“[Taylor’s men] came in and they sat down in the lounge and we sat opposite them… they then took out a quite scruffy paper and they handed it to Miss Campbell and said ‘these are the diamonds.'”
Farrow claimed Campbell told her Taylor received diamonds in the middle of the night. She testified, “[Campbell] said that in the night she had been awakened, some men were knocking at the door, and they had been sent by Charles Taylor, and they had given her a huge diamond.”
Last week in Campbell’s testimony, she did not know who sent her diamonds, but testified her then-agent White told her who probably sent the diamonds. White and Farrow testified Campbell said the diamonds were from Taylor. She claims she gave the diamonds to Jeremy Ractliffe who gave them to police.
Police spokesperson Musa Zondi confirms Ractliffe had uncut diamonds. “Yes, they are real diamonds. We cannot tell whether they are ‘blood diamonds’ or not. That will be part of the investigation,” Zondi said.
Taylor faces eleven counts for violating international law including, murder, rape, sexual slavery, enlistment of children under the age of fifteen, pillaging, enslavement, and “outrages upon personal dignity.”
Taylor allegedly traded “blood diamonds” for weapons and supplying the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) of Sierra Leone with weapons during the civil war from 1991 to 2002. This war conscripted child soldiers, an international crime. The prosecutors for the Special Court say Taylor trained the rebels and had them rape, murder, mutilate, and decapitate the civilians of Sierra Leone. Over 100,000 people died in the Sierra Leonean civil war. Taylor plead not guilty to all charges.
Linking the blood diamonds, used to support the RUF, to Taylor is a high priority for the prosecution.

Taking care of a home’s plumbing is one of the most important things a homeowner can do to prolong its lifespan. Many plumbing issues arise from the misuse of toilets and drains to dispose of items they aren’t suited for disposing of. This can cause a lot of problems with a home’s sewer system, creating clogs and backing it up into your home’s sinks and toilets. This can lead to a lot of problems when it comes to water damage, plumbing damage, and can also be an embarrassing situation for you to deal with. It can also lead to the prevention of your family getting rid of their own waste products, as well as preventing them from bathing properly. Getting a situation like this taken care of as soon as possible with Emergency Plumbing Services is recommended, to restore your home’s sewer system back to normal.
Other emergency situations can result in problems in the home, such as a water main bursting or leaks in a home creating water damage and mold growth. When mold grows in a home due to standing water or water damage in the area, it can create a serious health risk to you and your family which can get worse over time. The longer it’s allowed to grow in your home, the sicker your family can potentially get. It’s best to have a professional plumber resolve the situation that first started the mold problem, and then help to remove the mold growth and prevent it from returning. Many plumbers consider mold an emergency situation which requires their assistance as soon as possible.
Plumbing issues can arise when you least expect them, and oftentimes a plumbing nightmare will occur when you’re out of the home which can cause even more damage to occur to areas of your home than you may realize. When dealing with a plumbing emergency that has occurred while gone, you should expect to see extensive water damage in the home to both the home itself and your belongings. Calling for Emergency Plumbing Services as soon as you realize there’s a problem will help prevent further damage, but only if you act quickly.

British Columbia teachers have voted 91% in favour of withdrawing services, beginning today (October 7). This is in response to Bill 12 which, if passed, imposes a contract with neither pay raises nor caps on class sizes. It has passed third reading today and is expected to receive royal assent later today. B.C. teachers have had four such imposed contracts since 1993, spanning two different provincial governments. The B.C. Legislature has been meeting around the clock to try and get the motion through.
This issue has been escalating for some time. Already, B.C. teachers are greatly underpaid (in terms of lifetime earnings), in comparison to those in other provinces, due to the B.C. government’s zero wage increase policy for all public sector employees. In addition, they feel learning conditions are sub-par, with many classes overcrowded, and insufficient resources to provide for special needs children.
Hugh Finlayson, CEO of the BC Public School Employers’ Association, representing the government, has asked the Labour Relations Board to halt the action. He has said that the walk out, which would affect 600,000 students, would break labour code, since education is, by B.C. law, an essential service.
The labour board ruled at 11:00 PM October 6, 2005 that the action is illegal. It has ordered teachers to return to normal duties and schedules. They have also been asked not to picket at or near schools. This has had no effect on the teacher’s planned action.
Being categorized as an essential service makes any striking action illegal, unless approved by the Labour Board. The intent of the teachers’ original job action was to seek this approval, but this was halted by the passing of Bill 12. The International Labour Organization, the United Nations agency involved in upholding labour standards worldwide, has even urged Gordon Campbell’s government to repeal the law making education an essential service.
The government has threatened legal action against the union, and possibly even jail for the union leader, but the teachers are arguing that this action is not a strike, merely political protest, and is therefore covered under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
The situation could escalate quickly such as what occurred in the HEU strike. A general strike is not out of the question. Many unions have noted that they would stand-behined the BCTF.

The United Kingdom-based mobile Linux developers OpenedHand have announced that they have been acquired by the Intel Corporation, merging the Linux company with the Intel Open Source Technology Center.
“We are pleased to announce that OpenedHand Ltd has been acquired by Intel Corporation,” said OpenedHand in a statement it released on the acquisition. “The OpenedHand team will join the Intel Open Source Technology Center and will focus on the development of the Moblin Software Platform, the optimized software stack for Intel Atom processors.”
The statement continued by stating that “Intel will continue supporting open source projects currently led by OpenedHand staff such as Clutter and Matchbox projects, and in most cases, will accelerate these projects as they become an integral part of Moblin.”
Rob Bamforth, an analyst for Quocirca, said that this move showed the importance of Linux on mobile devices. He said that “we saw it [large companies purchasing mobile Linux development companies] earlier this year with Nokia buying Trolltech, it’s a sign that the mobile space is not as clear cut as the something like the PC one.” He continued by stating that in the PC market “you have a market dominated by PCs with Macs for some specialist users, but mobiles are not like that – there’s a diverse range of products, and, if anything, it’s becoming more diverse.”
OpenedHand has previously sold its products to companies such as One Laptop Per Child, iRex, Openmoko, ST Microelectronics, Access Co., Vernier and Nokia.

An infectious superbug spreading in the United States is to “emerge in force” in Canada, doctors fear. The bacteria have been reported popping up in day care centers and locker rooms across the U.S. Usually elderly or very ill hospital patients get the disease.
More than 2 million U.S. residents are infected every year, the Centers for Disease Control estimates.
An article in the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) on Tuesday said that Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) are “spreading with alarming rapidity.” The bacteria can cause boils, pimples, or in extreme cases, flesh-eating disease, and more.
“The resistant bacteria is an old foe with new fangs: a pathogen combining virulence, resistance and an ability to disseminate at large,” wrote Dr. John Conly, medical professor and an infectious disease specialist at the University of Calgary.
British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario are the provinces which already have had MRSA in hospitals.
A 30-year-old Calgary, Alberta man died last year of lung abscesses associated with the infection, as well as a three-month old toddler in Toronto, Ontario.
Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Alex Rios, last summer, suffered from an infection caused by Staphylococcus aureus in his leg. Pitcher Ty Taubenheim had a similar infection on his foot.
Doctors are currently investigating some Calgary residents, who could be one of the first Canadian reports of MRSA outside of a hospital setting.
JBL 4408A Monitor Review

I’d like to review today the 4400 series from Jbl Professional. These are studio monitors used by professionals and are a popular choice with professional music producers as well as movie soundtrack recording and television soundtracks. The reason most producers give for recommending JBL is the superior sound quality and reproduction. It’s pretty much but not totally agreed upon that JBL monitors lead the way as far as innovation goes and they offer a wide variety of products so it’s really no surprise that JBL stands at the top of a very competitive field.
In particular I would like to focus on the JBL 4408a Studio Monitor. These speakers are specially crafted with extra attention being paid to technical specs and consumer feedback resulting in an outstanding quality of sound and reliability. As you may have heard before with JBL what you hear is what you get. The JBL 4408a is a popular choice among smaller or home recording studios and or broadcast control rooms. The 4408a handles distortion famously as well as frequency responses and polar response with renown precision. The 4408a has an eight inch woofer and a power rating of one hundred watts. With an eight inch titanium tweeter and a two way monitor you don’t have to worry about any dips in audio levels in its acoustic output. How does JBL achieve such superior sound and handling of problematic audio fluctuations? For one thing they have designed transducers to facilitate optimum performance of their studio monitors such as the jbl 4408a which happens to be the latest addition to my ‘collection.’ They use technology called SFG which stands for symmetrical field geometry. These magnet structures cut down the irritating distortion which gives you a clean sound in the bass end as well as the lower mid range. The upper end is controlled by the titanium tweeters which, when you put it all together results in a studio worthy piece of equipment. As you can tell I love JBL and in particular the JBL 4408a as this is my new favorite toy. I’m a harsh critic of audio equipment so don’t take this positive review lightly as it was well earned. I love the power response and balanced energy output (on and off axis) and the low frequency transducers that give these monitors a super crisp studio worthy sound. It also has excellent left and right imaging via the titanium tweeters which help achieve a mirror imaged pair. All in all after years in the studio (off and on) I have settled on JBL as my preferred audio equipment because of the response and quality of sound. There are other good monitors out there and I’ve used many of them in my studio and others but I have finally settled on JBL. I think it’s the titanium speakers and the magnetic transducers that put this one over the top for me. I love clean low end and that is hard to come by. This is my opinion for what it’s worth and I hope you found this review helpful.

In the United States on Saturday, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) arrested a couple in West Virginia. Court documents released Sunday allege they tried to sell classified data to a foreign nation.
The Maryland couple, former U.S. Navy nuclear engineer Jonathan Toebbe and his wife Diana Toebbe, were both arrested and charged with violating the Atomic Energy Act. Mr. Toebbe worked on naval nuclear reactors and acoustic quieting. Ms. Toebbe is a teacher at the private Key School in their neighborhood in Annapolis, now on indefinite suspension according to the school.
U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland said in regards to the case, “The complaint charges a plot to transmit information relating to the design of our nuclear submarines to a foreign nation.” The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) alleges the couple tried to sell this information to a foreign agent who was actually an FBI undercover agent.
Documents filed in federal court allege Mr. Toebbe arranged to sell restricted information to a foreign power identified only as “COUNTRY1” over several months via encrypted messages, and that he arranged “drops” of these data on SD cards in various locations in exchange for payments in cryptocurrency.
At the first of the drops in West Virginia, the DOJ alleges Mr. Toebbe hid an SD card in a peanut butter sandwich while Ms. Toebbe acted as a lookout. At the second of these in eastern Virginia, the DOJ charges that an SD card was placed in a chewing gum package. Federal officers arrested the couple at the third drop site, in West Virginia, on Saturday.
Both Mr. and Ms. Toebbe are set to appear in federal court tomorrow in Martinsburg, West Virginia.
Meeting girl at college parties
by
Tandy Rosalia
For the first few years of college, most social events are held at parties because many of the people attending are under the age of 21. A lot of guys I’ve talked to have asked me “Since I’m not going to bars a lot, how do I meet girls at parties?”
It’s actually freakishly easy, and I can say without a doubt if you fit within social norms (IE have all your limbs attached, not deformed, speak the language at the party) You can easily be meeting countless girls. One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is that “girls just don’t like me” and “other guys have something I don’t.” This is dead wrong. The key to creating attraction and meeting/hooking up with a girl at a party can come down to three things. 1. Having a flirty vibe 2. Being a source of fun at the party (basically how you interact with everyone) 3. Knowing when to pull the trigger I’m going to break down these more 1. Having a flirty vibe If you simply sit in a corner not having fun then come out of no where and start blatantly hitting on a girl at a party it’s obviously creepy and also very high risk. If the girl rejects your old creeper man approach your going to look stupid. This is what a lot of guys resort to doing however if they really want a girl. It rarely works unless your a celebrity! There’s a much better way of pinging girls for attraction and it will start to work on every girl in the room. What I’m talking about is being a natural flirt…with everyone. This means talking to all the girls in the room, smiling, hugging them, playfully touching them (thumb war, tickling, picking them up and swinging them around). This does not mean blatantly hitting on every girl and being overly sexual Now, I’m not saying go up to one girl and do all of these in this order RIGHT NOW!. Being flirty naturally with all girls will make it more arousing and fun to talk to you. Girls love to flirt, and when your flirting with all the girls at the party you can bet your slippers that the other girls are gonna notice you having fun with other girls besides them. Once your doing this enough, your probably gonna start seeing girls trying to meet YOU instead. 2. Being a source of fun at a party This is probably the most important part. Girls like guys, girls like to flirt, but girls LOVE to have fun. If your not having a great time at a party its going to be really hard to get girls to notice you. When you go to parties you’ll notice a few people that are the life of the party. If they disappeared, people would suddenly notice and miss them. You have to be one of these people, this way girls will welcome the chance to talk to you and mooch off the fun you bring into their lives. If you aren’t a social person your going to have to push yourself to meet everyone at the party and be a social water hose instead of a social sponge. Going crazy at a party, talking loudly, having interesting stories that people want to hear will make you in demand socially. By doing this girls will literally start hovering around you to get in on the fun. An easy way to get in the habit of being this type of person is by meeting everyone in the room, being easily excitable, and amusing yourself instead of looking to others to make your night fun. 3. Knowing when and how to pull the trigger This is where so many guys mess up because they don’t understand how or are afraid to pull the trigger. When your at a party there is a few things that can REALLY help you with girls. If you getting a good vibe from a girl, pay attention for places where you can go talk alone. (patio, empty hallway, bed room or just an area away from the party) Why should you do this? Girls are not going to open up sexually or physically if they are surrounded by 15 of their closest judgmental friends. When you get a chance to hang out as a pair, you will notice the girl can finally relax and be herself with you. At this point you can really start to make a connection and even start hooking up a bit (OH BOY!) Don’t be afraid to get close to a girl you like and DEFINITELY don’t just sit there and chat about the weather. This will get the girl frustrated. If she has wandered off somewhere with you alone, shes there for one thing…YOU! Those are just some quick tips.
