Late Indian politician’s son in critical condition after suspected drug overdose

Saturday, June 3, 2006

Rahul Mahajan’s condition has improved and has been taken off ventilator support. Rahul’s CT scan report is normal and his vital parameters have shown an improvement. He will however, be kept under observation for another 3 days. “The condition of Rahul Mahajan has gradually improved over the last 12 hours. After due assessment of clinical status and investigation, our team of doctors found his vital parameters improving,” a medical bulletin released by the Apollo Hospital said.

Friday, June 2, 2006

Rahul Mahajan, the son of late BJP leader Pramod Mahajan has been admitted to the Apollo Hospital in New Delhi in a critical state, apparently after a drug overdose. Rahul was found in an unconscious state in his father’s residence in New Delhi early today morning. Vivek Moitra, Pramod Mahajan’s secretary who was with Rahul at the party has been declared dead presumably as a result of the same drug. Police say the Rahul, Vivek and three other men were drinking champagne together and were also apparently consuming cocaine. This assumption is based of the fact that opiate traces were found in the deceased Mr. Moitra’s pocket.

Doctors described Rahul’s condition as “critical but stable”. They said that details regarding what led to his present condition would be revealed after the conduction of a toxicology test. Two domestic helps rushed the men to hospital in the early hours of today morning. The helps disturbed the scene by clearing up the glasses and the bottles. Traces of what seems to be cocaine were however found in one the glasses.

Rahul is currently on a ventilator and his condition will have to be closely monitored for the next couple of days. He was supposed to visit Assam tomorrow to immerse his father’s ashes in the Brahmaputra. Mr. Pramod Mahjan died about a month ago after being shot by his brother. Rahul was on anti-depressants as a result of this.

How Does X Ray Digital Machine Function?

X Ray Digital Machine is an advanced form of x-ray inspection which produces a digital radiographic image instantly on a computer. This technique uses x-ray sensitive plates to capture data during object examination, which is immediately transferred to a computer without the use of an intermediate cassette. They’re the most popular form of diagnostic imaging, and they’re useful for a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. The cost of operating the facilities used to process the photographs, as well as the hassle of maintaining and archiving the actual images, have long been associated with the usage of X-ray technology in medicine. Both of these problems was addressed by X Ray Digital Machine, adopted in the mid-1980s.X-ray Apparatus That Isn’t MoveableThis kind of transformer necessitates transformers of such size and output that they must be installed into the room and connected to the mains with special electrical connections.X-ray Apparatus That Can Be Used AnywhereThe portable X-ray has proven to be an invaluable method for diagnosing and treating patients in intensive care facilities, hospitals, and nursing homes where access to a radiology department is restricted. This equipment is ideal for low-volume or startup operations that have limited capacity. There is no need for lead insulation in the walls, and the transformers are tiny and light. Portable X-ray devices may be set up with minimal or no upfront investment.Apparatus for mobile X-raysThe emergence of handheld optical radiography X-ray devices is one of the most recent advances of Digital Radiography. These devices allow users to transport their medical supplies within the hospital. This is a remedy for imaging non-ambulatory patients who are unable to make the journey to the X-ray room or who are difficult to transport. Although the benefits of portable X-ray equipment, the picture accuracy of a chest radiograph taken at the bedside may be minimal. Mobile X-ray scanners have the benefit of being able to carry the equipment to the patient, as well as having better performances than handheld devices. It’s even on wheels and has bigger transformers. No filmNew optical X-ray devices often have the benefit of being flexible. While there are modern digital X-ray technologies that were built from the ground up, there are also digital X-ray technologies that enable the usage of old film-based technology by using a digital film cassette.Benefits for the PatientThe patient profits from digital X-ray scans as well. First, original diagnostic findings, as well as any subsequent X-ray images that might be needed, are collected in minutes or hours rather than days, thanks to the instant availability of the images. Second, unlike conventional film-based radiographic systems, most optical X-ray systems can be fine-tuned to a far greater degree.ConclusionOne of the most significant scientific breakthroughs in medical imaging in recent years has been using X Ray Digital Machine. In the same way as personal video cameras have been rapidly replaced by both dedicated digital counterparts and radiographic films in X-ray imaging could become redundant in a few years.

Republican leaders in US want more tax relief in economic stimulus

Monday, January 26, 2009

As the newly inaugurated Barack Obama administration continues to push for a US$825 billion stimulus package to aid the struggling United States economy, some Republican legislators say they will not vote for such a plan without the inclusion of more tax cuts and less “unnecessary” spending.

Arizona Senator John McCain, Obama’s general election opponent and a leading voice within the Republican Party, says he would not vote for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan as it currently stands. Appearing on Fox News Sunday yesterday, McCain echoed his campaign platform in saying, “We need to make tax cuts permanent, and we need to make a commitment that there’ll be no new taxes.”

McCain and other Republicans say they are unhappy with the bill introduced in the House of Representatives, which combines roughly $550 billion in domestic spending with $275 billion in tax cuts. McCain believes not enough Republican proposals have been integrated into the plan, which he fears will result in the plan becoming “just another spending project” rather than a job creator.

“Republicans have not been brought in, to the degree that we should be in, to these negotiations and discussions. So far, as far as I can tell, no Republican proposal has been incorporated,” McCain said. “We’re losing sight of what the stimulus is all about, and that is job creation.”

The Arizona senator is known for his bipartisan efforts in Washington, D.C., but he defined his role in the new Senate as the “loyal opposition”, which does not mean “that I or my party will be a rubber stamp” for Obama, he said.

In his first weekly address since being sworn in, President Obama explained the stimulus plan in further detail, calling it a plan to “immediately jumpstart job creation as well as long-term economic growth.” He outlined several of the bill’s priorities, including the creation or salvation of up to four million jobs, as well as sweeping investments in health care, education, energy and infrastructure.

Among these investments are a new electricity grid with more than 3,000 miles of transmission lines, the weatherization of 2.5 million homes, health insurance protection for more than 8 million Americans, a renovation of over 10,000 schools, a project to repair thousands of miles of roadways, and an expansion of broadband Internet access.

Obama also laid out the rationale behind the stimulus, saying that “unprecedented action” is necessary in order to prevent further economic distress. “Our economy could fall $1 trillion short of its full capacity, which translates into more than $12,000 in lost income for a family of four,” Obama said. “In short, if we do not act boldly and swiftly, a bad situation could become dramatically worse.”

The president addressed the skepticism surrounding the stimulus package, pledging to “root out waste, inefficiency, and unnecessary spending”, while holding the government accountable for its actions. “We won’t just throw money at our problems,” Obama said. “We’ll invest in what works.”

Still, Republicans such as House Minority Leader John Boehner are skeptical of the plan’s effectiveness in rebuilding the economy. “I think a lot of Republicans will vote no because it’s a lot of wasteful Washington spending”, he commented on Meet the Press, repeating McCain’s call for less federal spending and more tax cuts.

Examples of “wasteful” spending cited by Republicans include millions of coupons to aid in the digital television transition, $200 million for new sod on the National Mall, and $360 million to fight sexually transmitted diseases, which includes funding for contraceptives. House Republicans have claimed it will take 10 years before the economy feels the effect of a stimulus, and that the combined spending of the stimulus and the financial bailouts of last year will leave future generations with over $2 trillion of debt.

In response to the stimulus plan being pushed through Congress, Boehner and Republican Whip Eric Cantor presented Obama with an alternative stimulus plan on Friday, one that relies exclusively on income and business tax cuts. “Our plan offers fast-acting tax relief, not slow-moving and wasteful government spending,” Boehner said. The counterproposal includes an income tax reduction that would save families an estimated $3,200 a year.

Despite this opposition, the stimulus bill is expected to pass through Congress by mid-February, as the Republican minority does not have enough votes to stop its approval. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell expressed a general support of the plan at a White House meeting with Obama and other congressional leaders. “I do think we’ll be able to meet the president’s deadline of getting the package to him by mid-February,” McConnell said. The bill is expected to go before Congress for a vote on Monday, February 2.

Obama’s top economic adviser Lawrence Summers defended the stimulus plan while on Meet the Press. He said the bill was intended to balance the long-term initiatives mentioned above with the tax cuts desired by Republicans. He also said Obama was committed to spending three quarters of the stimulus money within 18 months.

The Energy Efficient Mortgage

Submitted by: J Suffie

While you explore the refinancing options available to you, you might want to consider borrowing more than the amount needed to pay off your existing mortgage. You can use the extra money to make energy-efficiency home improvements that might help you save a significant amount over time. If you consider that the interest paid on your mortgage is most likely tax deductible and switching to energy efficient appliances will immediately lower your monthly bill you might see savings sooner than you think.

What is an Energy Efficient Mortgage?

An energy efficient mortgage is a type of additional mortgage that can be added to an already existing home mortgage. With this type of federally recognized loan, the borrower is eligible for unique benefits related to the purchase of an energy efficient home or energy efficiency remodeling. Benefits include eligibility for financing energy-efficiency measures as a part of your mortgage, updating your home with newer more efficient features and appliances, stretching debt-to-income qualifying ratios on additional loans, and qualifying for a larger loan. When debt-to-income ratios improve, a larger percentage of the borrower’s monthly income can be allocated to the mortgage payment. In short, that means the buyer has more borrowing power although his or her income has not changed.

How do I know if my home is energy efficient?

Before trying to gain approval for an energy-efficient mortgage, have a certified home energy rater come to your house and conduct an energy audit. The audit proves to the lender that the home has areas that could benefit from improved energy efficiency and lower the monthly power bill. The cost of improvements needed in these specific areas found to be energy inefficient can then be added to your mortgage.

The U.S. Department of Energy established guidelines for companies offering Home Energy Ratings. Rating should be in the form of a numerical score from 1 to 100. An additional rating based on a range of one to five stars may also be given as well as an estimated energy cost. A higher score indicates greater efficiency. The rater will also identify upgrades that are considered “cost effective.” These types of upgrades will save more money through energy savings than they cost to install. A Home Energy Rating conducted by a certified professional will usually cost between $100 and $300. The cost of the rating may be financed as part of the mortgage, covered by the lender, or paid for by the owner.

Am I eligible for an Energy Efficient Mortgage?

Any buyer who can qualify for a home loan can qualify for an energy efficient mortgage. Energy efficient upgrades can be done on most homes, and the loans are available to anyone regardless of location, home value, or existing utility set up. Energy efficiency mortgages can be added to government loans or conventional loans. Your lender will determine your exact benefits based on your home energy rating. In general, an energy efficient mortgage is available for older homes that qualify for upgrades as well as for homes not requiring upgrades in some cases. New construction can also qualify, check with the U.S. Department of Energy, the Alliance to Save Energy, or the Federal Citizen Information Center for more details.

Worker dies on bridge project in Toledo, Ohio

Friday, April 20, 2007

Andrew Burris, from Curtis, Ohio, and member of Carpenters Local 1138, died in Toledo, Ohio when the construction platform he was on fell around 9:15 a.m. EST. The platform was attached to the northbound side of the Veterans’ Glass City Skyway, a new bridge on Interstate 280. The platform was clamped to the side of the bridge, and broke off. Burris fell about 95 feet to the ground, where he landed on the east side of the roadway. Authorities from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration do not know why the platform broke free from the bridge. The Toledo Police department does not suspect foul play, and considers the death to be accidental. The $220 million bridge is scheduled for opening in June, 2007, and is the largest construction project in the history of Ohio.

“On behalf of Director Beasley and the Ohio Department of Transportation, we extend our deepest sympathy to the family of Andrew Burris,” said ODOT District 2 director, Dave Dysard. “We also extend our condolences to his relatives, friends and his fellow workers who have made us proud through their commitment and dedication to their work. Andrew was a part of the team that took the pylon to the top back in 2005. For four-and-a-half years, he was an integral part of the team that worked to complete this vital link for our community.”

This is the second fatal accident on the bridge. On Presidents’ Day in 2004, five workers were killed and four were injured when a crane collapsed.

Mr. Burris was from a line of carpenters, and kept a scrapbook of the project. His mother, Ruth, was quoted as saying “I think he felt closer to heaven there.”

Woman returns home with Christmas turkey, a month after setting out

Tuesday, January 19, 2010

A Scottish woman who set out before Christmas to purchase a turkey finally made it home on Monday, after being cut off by snow for a month. Kay Ure left the Lighthouse Keeper’s cottage on Cape Wrath, at the very northwest tip of Great Britain, in December. She was heading to Inverness on a shopping trip.

However on her return journey heavy snow and ice prevented her husband, John, from travelling the last 11 miles to pick her up. She was forced to wait a month in a friend’s caravan, before the weather improved and the couple could finally be reunited.

They were separated not just for Christmas and New Year, but also for Mr Ure’s 58th birthday. With no fresh supplies, he was reduced to celebrating with a tin of baked beans. He also ran out of coal, and had to feed the couple’s six springer spaniels on emergency army rations.

“It’s the first time we’ve been separated”, said Mr Ure in December. “We’ve been snowed in here for three weeks before, so we are well used to it and it’s quite nice to get a bit of peace and quiet.”

How To Choose The Best Spas In Denver

byAlma Abell

Are you in the mood to have a girl’s day at the spa? Do you love to be pampered, to get your nails done, your hair done, and just want to relax? What about a couple’s day along with a couple’s massage? Sounds great doesn’t it? If so, finding the best Spas in Denver will be essential to your overall experience. This article will discuss how to find the right spa resort for what you want and how to ensure that you are not paying an arm and a leg in order to get it.

First and foremost, when choosing a spa resort, check to ensure that they offer the services that you are looking for. Most spas offer the typical manicure, pedicure, and massage services. You can even get your hair done usually too. However, some spas offer more. Does a relaxing day include a round of golf for you? What about going for a swim or enjoying an evening of fine dining with your spouse or partner? If you are interested in any of these things, usually a high end spa resort will have them available for you. However, you should ensure that the spa resort offers them prior to booking an appointment.

Subsequently, after you have decided on which spa resort to go to, but before booking the day, check to see what kind of promotions they may have going on. Often times, for new customers, you may get coupons for things such as a certain percentage off your entire purchase or possibly even a complimentary round of golf. If you have been referred to the spa resort by a friend or family member, check to see if there are any added perks for you and the person who referred you. Having a great referral program can ensure that a spa resort keeps customers coming back and referring their friends and family.

In conclusion, booking the best Spas in Denver can be critical to having a wonderfully relaxing day. If you book one that is not right for you, you may leave unsatisfied and unhappy. If you would like to book an appointment, visit the website for more information.
