Plane crashes into office block in Austin, Texas

Thursday, February 18, 2010

A small plane crashed into a building, which was one of the Echelon office complex, in north Austin, Texas this morning at 09:56 local time (1456 UTC).

Federal officials say the plane owner was Joseph Andrew Stack III; presumed to be the pilot who set his house on fire on the 1800 block of Dapplegrey Lane in north Austin an hour earlier. He then drove to Georgetown Municipal Airport, approximately 20 miles away, took off and then crashed his private plane into the Echelon complex.

The Federal Aviation Authority indicated the light aircraft was a Piper Cherokee PA-28, as did news reports and eye witnesses. The FAA said the plane had no flight plan and was under Visual Flight Rules.

Mr. Stack committed suicide, and a suicide note has been located. Mr. Stack’s suicide note mentions anti-government and anti-corporate ideals, as well as problems with the Internal Revenue Service and that he lost money in the Enron scandal. Although the incident was intentional, a Department of Homeland Security official said that terrorism is not suspected. The online host of the note, T35 Hosting, later removed it in its entirety after the FBI requested its censorship. However, Wikinews has preserved the full text of the letter.

Austin Fire Department reported around 1100 local time (1600 UTC) that two people were transported to local hospitals and one was unaccounted for. One man was admitted at a local hospital under serious condition for smoke inhalation. The other man suffered from second-degree burns on 25% of his back and has been transported by helicopter to Brooke Medical Center in San Antonio and is said to be in stable condition.

The seven-story Echelon Building One is located on 9430 Research Boulevard and contains Internal Revenue Service offices. The Echelon building complex houses a number of federal offices, including Central Intelligence Agency and Federal Bureau of Investigation. Research Boulevard is the service road of U.S. Route 183. The incident has caused severe backups on both Research Boulevard and Route 183.

A witness told The Austin Statesman that he saw the plane flying lower than usual, then it made a sharp turn and hit the building.

An Austin County EMS official, James Shamard, said that smoke is visible from at least a mile from the crash site. Another official for the Austin Fire Department said that two persons who were working in the building are still unaccounted for.

MSNBC reports that there was some form of domestic dispute between Mr. Stack and his wife before the incident. He then reportedly used gasoline to light his house on fire. When the fire department arrived, they rescued his wife and teenage daughter.

According to Jerry Cullen, a pilot and former flight instructor who witnessed the crash, the plane was traveling at high speed at time of impact.

What Do Home Appraisers Look For When Doing An Appraisal For A Mortgage Refinance

By Amy Nutt

When undergoing a mortgage refinance, one step in the process is acquiring an appraisal of your home. An appraisal is a written estimate of the market value of your property. Mortgage lenders will use an appraisal to determine the amount one qualifies for the mortgage. The appraisal will also establish how much equity there is in a home. It gives an estimate of the price that can be obtained by selling the property. An appraisal is a necessary step when refinancing existing mortgage because it assures the lender or bank that the property will sell for at least the amount which they will be providing as a home loan. This protects them in the event of a mortgage default by ensuring they will get their money back if they have to repossess the house and sell it.

The mortgage lender will normally arrange for the appraisal. It often depends on the mortgage company’s policy for obtaining appraisals. A home appraisal is different from a home inspection. Appraisers look for value in a home. Lenders need to know the home is worth what you want to borrow. The appraiser is a licensed professional that will do a market analysis of the sale price of a home. The appraisal will require a thorough inspection of your home inside and out. The appraiser will look for problems in the property.

Appraisals generally include: evaluating the condition of your home, details of the property, a comparison of the property with other properties in the area, an evaluation of the real estate market in the area, the type of area where the property is located, and an estimate of how long it will take to sell. Although it may vary among appraisers, generally speaking, they take home sales within about a 1/4 mile within the last 4 – 6 months and average them per square foot. They then multiply that number by the square footage of the home being appraised.

The appraiser will assess the actual home. He or she will measure the outside of your home, look at the inside, take pictures of both the outside and inside and determine a market price for your home based on the most current previous sales of nearby homes. Such aspects that affect a home value include: kitchen, number of bedrooms, size of rooms, finished basement, new roof, number of bathrooms, new windows, and a solid foundation. They will also measure the property line to get the amount of square feet on the outside. They will then notify the lender or person who requested the appraisal. The lender uses all of the information to determine the amount of the refinance loan.

The appraiser’s assessment of a home is an extremely important part of refinancing a mortgage. It is important to inform the appraiser of any new additions such as a garage or patio deck. Before an appraiser arrives, make sure that you have all repairs completed that can affect the value of your home. Factors that can affect the value can include poor upkeep of the property and any damage to the home. Because of the low interest rates being offered by banks and other lenders, this is a great time to refinance. Knowing what appraisers look at when assessing a home and neighborhood will increase the likelihood that you will get a great refinance loan.

UK Chancellor of the Exchequer makes 2005 Budget speech

Wednesday, March 16, 2005

The United Kingdom Chancellor of the Exchequer, the Right Honourable Gordon Brown PC MP, in a speech to the British House of Commons today presented his ninth Budget, what is very likely to be his last Budget before the next UK General Election. This opened the parliamentary debate on the 2005 Finance Bill, and was followed by responses from the opposition parties.

In a 48 minute long speech, the Chancellor presented a Budget of “tax cuts that are reasonable, spending that is affordable, and [economic] stability that is paramount”, that was “the prudent course for Britain”. There were few surprises that had not already been indicated in his 2004 pre-Budget report. The increase in the threshold on stamp duty was greater than that forecast by commentators, as was the amount of the Council Tax rebate to households with pensioners.

Caroline Kennedy drops bid for New York Senate seat

Thursday, January 22, 2009

Caroline Kennedy, considered to be among the front-runners for the United States Senate seat vacated by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, yesterday withdrew her name from consideration for the seat. New York state Governor David Paterson had been reported as intending to name her as Clinton’s replacement this Saturday.

Caroline Kennedy, the only surviving child of former U.S. President John F. Kennedy, issued a statement at midnight saying she had quit her bid because of “personal reasons”.

A close associate of Kennedy, who spoke under the condition of anonymity, said that the decision was not related to the recent health issues of Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA), Caroline Kennedy’s uncle. The senator suffered a seizure Tuesday while attending a luncheon with the newly inaugurated U.S. President Barack Obama in the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C.. He was rushed out of the event in a wheelchair and taken for treatment to Washington Hospital, where he remains. In May 2008 he was diagnosed with brain cancer, which required an operation.

The New York Post has reported that Kennedy withdrew her bid because Paterson was not going to choose her for the position. Citing the anonymous source, the Post said that “her poor performances in media interviews and in private sessions with various officials” is Paterson’s reason for not appointing her to the position. Paterson will reportedly make his decision by Saturday, January 26.

New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo is the highest-profile candidate still up for consideration for the last two years of Clinton’s term. Cuomo, who has not commented on this recent turn of events, was the housing secretary during former President Bill Clinton‘s time in office, and in his current role as attorney general has overseen nation-wide reforms for student loans and participated in limiting Wall Street corporate spending.

Critical Questions To Ask Of A Window Company

byadmin

Replacing the windows in your home is something that is not an everyday topic around the dinner table but when the time comes to choose a window company in Honolulu HI to supply and install replacement windows there are a number of things you will want to brush up on. You will want to know that the company you finally choose is one which will have provided you with excellent advice during the assessment stage and has a verifiable track record for excellence.

There are a number of salient questions that should be asked as you go through the process of selecting the Window Company in Honolulu HI that will eventually be given your business. Any top-tier window company will gladly answer all your questions and just as it makes a lot of senses to get more than one quotation; it makes equal sense to ask several window companies the same questions. It is important that you feel confident that you have chosen the best windows available and the best window company to supply and install them.

Here are a few critical questions that you should ask the candidates for your business:

* Get the full name and address of the company. If all you get is a PO Box number then insist on their street address. If at all possible try to eventually choose a window company which is reasonably close to your home, you can usually expect better service and response in the future.

* Is the company fully insured? Do not consider working with a window company that does not carry liability insurance and workers comp, these insurances will protect you in the event there is an unfortunate accident while the company personnel are on site.

* Make sure the company is licensed by the state or city whichever is applicable. Remember, having a license to operate means that the contractor has had to pass certain criteria. A business license is not the same; it is a tax requirement and bears no relevance to the skills of the contractor.

* Find out how long the company has been in business. The longer the better is the key, any company that say less than five years old might still be learning the business. Of course, every business has to start somewhere; this is when it’s a good idea to check references and the BBB to see if there have been any problems in the past that have not been satisfactorily solved.

Along with the warranty on workmanship and the company’s record in solving problems all you have to do is ask the companies that you feel comfortable with for a written proposal that fully details what you and the window company have agreed upon in full.

CCC; Custom Contracts, Inc. are a window company in Honolulu HI that have been servicing the needs of the community for over 25 years. As specialists in window replacement they have been selected to install over 200,000 windows and counting.

Triple limb-reattachment fails – boy loses foot

Tuesday, April 5, 2005Terry Vo, the 10-year old Australian boy who had two hands and a foot reattached by surgeons after losing them in an accident, has had to have the foot re-amputated. He will be given a prosthetic foot in its place.

The operation to re-attach three limbs was thought to have been a first – but was ultimately unsuccessful, with the foot having died inside, and receiving insufficient blood supply following the surgery to reattach it.

“That would lead to the small muscles in the foot actually constricting, the toes bending over and a deformed …. foot that is sort of clawed over and doesn’t have good sensation,” said plastic surgeon, Mr Robert Love today, on Australia’s ABC Radio.

“Even if you can get all of that to survive, he [would be] worse off than having had an amputation.”

“What is very disappointing is that for the first two days after [the operation] the foot looked absolutely magnificent,” he said.

Terry’s hands were healing well, said the surgeon. The prosthetic foot would allow him to walk normally, since his knee was intact.

GWAR frontman Dave Brockie aka Oderus Urungus dies at age 50

Tuesday, March 25, 2014

Dave Brockie of rubber-costumed metal act GWAR was found dead in his Richmond, Virginia home late on Sunday. Better known by stage name Oderus Urungus, Brockie was 50.

Founder, singer, leader, and occasional bassist of GWAR, Brockie’s career stretches back to 1984. He and fellow Virginia Commonwealth University art students formed what they dubbed “Earth’s only openly extra-terrestrial rock band”, growing famous for satirical and obscene lyrical themes, and live shows featuring the defilement of effigies and plenty of fake blood.

Fellow founding member Don Drakulich, who still makes props and costumes for the rockers, said he was “very sad” and “shocked”. He said Brockie’s roommate found the corpse. GWAR members changed frequently and the band recovered from the sudden death of guitarist Cory “Flattus Maximus” Smoot during a 2011 tour, but the New York Daily News notes “it’s hard to envision their saga going further” after Brockie’s death.

The band ran with the backstory of crashing to “the most insignificant planet in the universe” 43 million years ago before creating humans by having sex with apes. Becoming encased with ice, the legend ran that upon thawing out in 1984 the members decided to form a band.

I am one of the blessed people that gets to do what I love to do for a living

Manager Jack Flanagan announced the death via GWAR’s website, adding a post-mortem will be conducted. “My main focus right now is to look after my band mates and his family” he said. Flanagan said another GWAR member found the body.

Brockie said in 2009 “I am one of the blessed people that gets to do what I love to do for a living.” GWAR received a Grammy nomination in 1993, with Phallus in Wonderland up for Best Longform Music Video.

Fellow Virginia rocker Randy Blythe, vocalist for Lamb of God, paid tribute online, writing on Instagram “When someone dies, a lot of the time people will say ‘Oh, he was a unique person, really one of a kind, a true original’ […] I can’t think of ANYONE even remotely like him.”

He never put much stock in ‘limits’

Blythe also took to Facebook. “Right now, if I were to truly honor Dave in the way HE would do it if it were ME that had died, I would make a completely tasteless joke about his death. But I do not have the stomach for that — Dave would, but not me. He never put much stock in ‘limits’.”

Ex-GWAR guitarist Steve Douglas said on Facebook “I have had a few bad days in my life but this one truly ranks right up there. […] you are gone and it is hurting very badly!” “I wish it was a joke” said another ex-member, Chris Bopst. “Everyone is in shock.”

Former bassist Mike Bishop paid tribute in an interview with Style Weekly. “Dave was one of the funniest, smartest, most creative and energetic persons I’ve known,” he said. “He was brash sometimes, always crass, irreverent, he was hilarious in every way. But he was also deeply intelligent and interested in life, history, politics and art.”

Pa Homeowner’s Insurance Is Needed When You Buy A New Home

By R Daniel Williams

You cannot obtain a bond on a new home as the bank won’t grant you the bond unless you have a Pennsylvania homeowner’s insurance policy which must be taken out for the full time that your bond exists. This type of insurance only covers the house itself and any outbuildings that may be on the property like the garden shed and your garage as well as any other outdoor fixtures.

When you buy a new home and you are taking out a bond one of the requirements from the bank is that you have a pa homeowner’s insurance for the full duration of the bond term. The insurance policy will cover the main building as well as the outbuildings. In addition your pool will also be covered and you must insure against fire, theft, lightening, water damage, earthquakes and so on. Make sure your policy covers everything.

If you house has a thatched roof which is very prone to burning or may even be struck by lightning you need insurance as well as a lightening conductor. You need to cover any damage which may occur to your geysers as well. Just make sure that as well as your home insurance you have full comprehensive cover for everything else as well.

With a homeowner’s insurance policy they can separately include all the other valuables which you need to insure as well as items such as burst water pipes or maybe someone comes onto your property and vandalizes it breaking windows and so on.

Pennsylvania home Insurance companies usually send an agent out to visit the property which is to be insured and the assessor will check the property like the construction as well as the roof or thatch and check all the out buildings and will make notes of any damages as well as the condition of your buildings. A check on the suburb will also be assessed.

In order to find the best policy that suits your requirements you have to shop around which can be tiring but well worth it in the end and every one that you contact ask as many questions as possible like what does the homeowners insurance policy include, are there restrictions and what benefits do you get from the policy, is the house paid for by the insurance on death.

You also need to find out how much you have to pay in if you need to make a claim and for how long will the premiums last for, will it be a year or shorter at the same price and will the premiums go up if yes by how much will the cost go up.

Also make sure you look into what kind of reputation the Pennsylvania homeowner’s insurance company has and when making a claim do they pay out promptly or do they run with a load of excuses. Find the best deal you can as home insurance can be rather costly so research will ultimately save you money even though it could take some time to find a reputable company it is well worth the effort.
