Shooting at school leaves one dead in Tennessee, United States

Thursday, August 21, 2008

On Thursday, 15-year-old student, Ryan McDonald, was shot and killed. The shooting occurred at just after 8:00am (UTC-5), at Central High School, in Knoxville, Tennessee.

According to Deputy Chief of Police of the Knoxville police department, William C. Roehl stated that the shooting was not “random” and that “they had contact with one another”. The shooting which occurred 8:11am (UTC-5), followed a confrontation in the cafeteria. Police arrived on the scene at 8:13am, and the suspect was taken into custody at 8:17am. McDonald was taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center where he died at 8:57am, according to the police.

Police have arrested Jamar B. Siler, also 15, and charged him with first-degree murder. Judge Tim Irwin set September 17, 2008 as the trial date. Siler is being held at a juvenile detention center.

Kevin Perry, a pastor at Word of Life Ministries, said he had spoken to a student who witnessed the shooting.

“He saw them when they were arguing and pushing and shoving,” Perry said, recounting what the student had told him. “He didn’t see the guy shoot him. What he did see was the guy fall.”

Another high school student, Chad Griffin, was ten feet away from where the confrontation occurred and said that “he [McDonald] got shot and started walking and he was holding his chest. There was blood everywhere. And then he fell and his arm hit me.”

The school was preparing to release students, and bring them to a local church were they could be picked up by their guardians. Central High School has around 1,400 students.

‘Earth-based life can survive in hydrogen-rich atmospheres’: MIT professor Dr Seager tells Wikinews about her research on organisms thriving in oxygen-less environment

Friday, December 25, 2020

In May, a study was published in journal Nature Astronomy, conducted by Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor Dr Sara Seager and other researchers, showing single-celled organisms like Escherichia coli (E. coli) and yeast can thrive in both 100% hydrogen gas and helium atmospheres. Wikinews discussed the findings with Dr Seager to know more about her research.

Life has not been observed in any habitat other than Earth, which has an oxygen-rich environment. While Earth’s atmosphere is dominated by nitrogen gas, oxygen is essential for advanced living organisms. Some species of microorganisms do not require oxygen for metabolism, called anærobic organisms, such as methanogens which rely on carbon-dioxide while releasing methane.

Researchers used Escherichia coli strain K-12 and Saccharomyces cerevisiæ strain S288C for this experiment. The two microorganisms were kept in four different environments: one being 100% air, and the other three being anærobic environments: 100% H2, 100% He, and 80%-20% N2-CO2. The environments were kept in at 28° Celsius. The researchers made sure the anaerobic experiment environments were anoxic, and had installed oxygen sensors to report fluctuation in the oxygen level. They monitored growth of E. coli using optical density measurement, and they used a hæmocytometer for yeast.

The study reported the organisms were reproducing normally in both 100% H2 and 100% He environment. However, the sigmoid-shaped growth curve was not on par with 100% air. E. coli and yeast switch from ærobic respiration, which uses oxygen, to anærobic respiration and fermentation. Both processes are less efficient and do not produce as much energy as ærobic respiration.

E. coli in an 80%-20% N2-CO2 environment had slower growth rate as CO2 dissolves and makes the liquid medium acidic. Such reduction in growth rate was not observed for yeast cultures, which can thrive in acidic environments. However, yeast’s growth rate in 100% air was far greater than in the other three media. The likely reason for this significant difference was lack of oxygen for non-respiratory purposes, the research reported. Oxygen is essential for synthesis of biochemicals such as heme and sterols, which are important for yeast. In atmospheres lacking oxygen to produce these chemicals, yeast fungi have stunted growth rate.

With this discovery, Dr Seager said scientists can now observe even more planets to study for habitable life.

“There’s a diversity of habitable worlds out there, and we have confirmed that Earth-based life can survive in hydrogen-rich atmospheres. We should definitely add those kinds of planets to the menu of options when thinking of life on other worlds, and actually trying to find it”, Professor Seager said.

A rocky planet with expanded hydrogen-rich atmosphere should be easy to detect using the emerging technologies. Hydrogen and helium gas have very low density. Dr Seager said, “It’s kind of hard to get your head around, but that light gas just makes the atmosphere more expansive […] And for telescopes, the bigger the atmosphere is compared to the backdrop of a planet’s star, the easier it is to detect.”

The research paper noted rocky planets which have radius below 1.7 times Earth’s radius (Earth’s radius is roughly 6360 km) can support a hydrogen-rich atmosphere, if water were to react with Iron.

The research paper reported E. coli releases a number of gases when it lives in hydrogen-based atmosphere including ammonia, methanethiol, dimethylsulfide, carbonyl sulfide, carbonyl disulfide and nitrous oxide. These gases can serve as biosignature gases which can help astronomers detect and study potential life on exoplanets.

Confirming life can thrive in atmospheres that do not have oxygen, Seager said “Astronomers should keep an open mind as to which planets are worth searching for life”.

With NASA’s James Webb Telescope scheduled to be deployed next year, the paper suggests researchers could observe smaller exoplanets that orbit small red-dwarf stars.

Lap Band Surgery Promotes Steady And Safe Weight Loss For Men And Women

Lap Band Surgery Promotes Steady and Safe Weight Loss for Men and Women

by

nse media

Are you overweight? Have you struggled to lose weight through diet and exercise but haven’t been able to maintain it? Does your weight affect your life and your self-confidence? Have you had these weight issues for the past five years or longer? If you have answered yes to any of these questions, you might be a good candidate for lap band weight loss surgery.

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N11oORVsrrM[/youtube]

This specialty weight loss surgery was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2001 and has enjoyed popularity and positive results since. This simple outpatient surgery is minimally invasive, affordable, safe and effective for promoting steady and significant weight loss in both men and women ages 18 and older.Lap band surgery

is an outpatient surgery that employs the use of something called a gastric band, a silicone band that a surgeon simply places around the top portion of the patient’s stomach to reduce the stomach size drastically – after the surgery, the stomach can only hold about one ounce of food (roughly the size of a golf ball). What this means is that the patient’s hunger pangs and ability to consume food will decrease, slowing down digestion and resulting in ongoing weight loss. The band can be adjusted over time (and if a woman becomes pregnant) to either speed up or slow down the weight loss journey.

Most patients will loss about one-and-a-half to two pounds of weight per week after the lap band surgery; these steady results give men and women time to adjust to the weight loss and lifestyle changes safely and effectively. While the lap band certainly helps with weight loss efforts, it is not a magic pill that changes the body overnight by itself; men and women who have this procedure must be willing to make some real changes in their diet, exercise and overall habits. At the five-year mark, the results for lap band surgery and gastric bypass surgery are generally quite similar. Weight loss is slower with lap band surgery, but it is also more comfortable and the surgery itself is far less invasive. While men and women who elect lap band surgery rave about the weight loss results, they are also often thrilled by many of the other health benefits. Weight loss can also lead to a reduction in high blood pressure and stress issues, joint problems, sleep apnea and other sleep disorders, diabetes and many other issues and diseases. A healthier weight can lead to a healthier life. Lap band weight loss surgery can change the shape of your stomach and the shape of your life. Talk to a board-certified surgeon today if you think this is an appropriate procedure for you.

Filipino activist arrested for disrupting Manila Cathedral mass in Reproductive Health Bill protest

Saturday, October 2, 2010

Popular Filipino social commentator and tour guide Carlos Celdran staged a protest action in Manila, Philippines against church opposition to the Reproductive Health Bill. Dressed as Jose Rizal, Celdran, 37, entered Manila Cathedral during a mass with Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim, Manila Archbishop Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales, the Papal Nuncio Archbishop Edward Adams, and other Catholic bishops present, standing before the altar with a sign bearing the word “Damaso” — a reference to the villainous, power-wielding Spanish friar from Rizal’s novel Noli Me Tangere, who represents the abuses of the Catholic Church during the 19th century Spanish occupation of the Philippines. He shouted “Stop getting involved in politics!” before he was taken away by the police at around 4:30 p.m. Once outside, Celdran said the Church officials “need to hear what the Filipinos are saying: that 90 percent of the people want the RH [Reproductive Health Bill].”

At around 8:15 p.m. the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines filed charges against Celdran for violation of Article 133 of the Revised Penal Code, which prohibits “offending religious feelings.” Sorsogon Bishop Arturo Bastes, who previously headed the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines-Episcopal Commission for the Biblical Apostolate (CBCP-ECBA), said, “What is approved by people does not mean it is approved by God.”

Celdran reported in a media interview following his arrest that “I kinda showed the [priests] what [civil disobedience] was like. The Millennium Development Goals of the Philippines hinge on controlling the population and maternal health, but they have done nothing but lie and blackmail…the Presidents and deprive the poorest of the poor of reproductive health services.” He had announced the action via tweet the previous day, saying: “Carlos Celdran is going to go to Manila Cathedral at 3pm to COUNTER the CBCP/Bible anti-RH group. Anyone want to join me?”

Celdran has been tweeting and giving media interviews from his jail cell. Through Twitter he expressed surprise that the Catholic Bishop’s Conference of the Philippines filed charges. He faces up to five years in prison. At approximately 5:25am Manila time, he tweeted “its just hitting me now. I can’t believe the CBCP [Catholic Bishop’s Conference of the Philippines] has the capacity and the desire to see me jailed. Who is next?”

It appears that this action was part of a larger program of protest, as the previous day he had invited his Facebook friends to a flash mob photo opportunity in front of the Catholic Bishop’s Conference of the Philippines taking place October 1, where he reported he would be wearing a bishop’s costume.

Celdran was freed almost a day later on 6,000-peso (US$138) bail. Friends of the artist had set up a Facebook fan page calling for his release, drawing more than 12,000 supporters by the time he posted bail.

“I apologize for being rude, but it was necessary for me to be rude,” he told reporters while in custody on Thursday. “I am sorry for the method that I used but I have no apologies for the message that I made.”

In a statement Friday, Manila’s 238 priests expressed “disapproval and condemnation” of the protest.

“These actions cannot by any means be considered within the purview of freedom of expression,” the statement said. “Instead they were malicious acts directed towards a faith, a religion that was represented by its leaders and the faithful gathered.”

President Benigno Aquino’s support of the people’s right to contraception has angered the Catholic Bishop’s Conference of the Philippines and galvanized church opposition to the Reproductive Health Bill, that calls for contraceptives to be provided in government hospitals and sex education to be taught in public schools.

“We are approaching these issues from the moral aspect like the unborn. Abortion is a grave crime, excommunication is attached to those (acts). That is an issue of gravity. That is a violation of God’s commandment,” said Odchimar over the Church-run Radio Veritas.

Malacañang Palace shrugged off Odchimar’s declaration. “We are guided by our conscience. My position has not changed. The state’s duty is to educate our families as to their responsibilities and to respect their decisions if they are in conformity to our laws,” President Aquino said.

Proponents of the Reproductive Health Bill have argued that rapid population growth and high fertility rates have exacerbated crushing poverty, and birth control could be a powerful way to raise living standards.
